Description this picture gave me such a headache..when my computer crashed, ..I just about cried. I had completed most except for Kaoru's kimono and obi. I had also planned to relook at the lighting and shading, and the expression..

after much twiddling with my tablet PC function to reduce the interference with the wacom, it still took me one whole night just to paint the kimono. The degree of stutter is ...urgh!!! I spent as much time correcting smudges as I did painting, I dare not touch on the finer points on the face..

I'm not sure how long it'll take me to get things up and running as usual, but with all the other real life issues, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Okay... I have seriously just stared and taken in the absolute beauty of this piece for ages now. It is incredible.

The hair is INCREDIBLE in this piece, as is the scenery. And that is a difficult angle to be trying to draw for kenshin, but it looks so natural and beautiful. And to pull the "anime-ness" out of it without losing any of the characters...

I'm really happy that you are entering. You are a good artist and I'm sure what ever you put will be wonderful
I had a look at the pic just now. Technically the lines and shading are beautifully drawn, and I am assuming that the top portion would be a close up / another angle of the pair. The way you colour, it should be a beautiful piece. But I must apologize as I'm not going to give specific suggestions as I am judging this contest and personally I feel that it wouldn't be fair. (You can ask me any other time, though )

However, I'll agree with your observation that it resembles the OVA pic, and that might work against you. I had also just seen an older deviation, and a previous contest entry depicting more or less the same scene.

Actually, the theme is 'What you mean to me' not just love, so you can expand your interpretation to other pairings/ relationships, not just 'love', I'm seeing a lot of Tomoe/Kenshin and Kaoru/Kenshin. It's pretty hard to make an impression when a lot of people are having the same idea..

HB loved Tomoe, but she also appreciates creative and novel interpretations of an idea, and loved being surprised by how artist interprets a theme. That's probably part of the reason she continued to hold them year after year.

Having said that, you may still surprise me with what you can come up with. If you love the pic that you are doing, it would still be beautiful and there are also other aspects to consider

I already how I wanted her to look - relieved and happy at the same time; the current expression was an adjustment from the reference I had, not what I wanted. Planned on tweaking after the other parts are finished but now I've got to sort out the sensitivity of the PC and the wacom first. Trying to paint last night was like moving a piece of cupboard with nothing other than brute strength. A lot of overshoots and mistakes..so I dare not touch the face

Hahaha well it looks fine to me. She looks a bit more...dazed; As if she can't believe that this is real and that Kenshin is actually there with her. Almost like she's hallucinating. That's not bad though! It's just how I interpret the expression. ^_^
