Description

"Impasse"

Tyrannosaurus rex, Alamosaurus sanjuanensis. An acrylic painting of a standoff between a large Tyrannosaurus and a titanic Alamosaurus.

The idea for this painting originated from my time at 2015 SVP meeting in Dallas, where I doodled the initial idea in my sketchbook, which Jack Horner (who was coincidentally behind me) saw and said "That's cool." The original sketch differs from this quite a bit and this one is a great improvement on it. The sky and mood were inspired by the wildfires we were having over the summer here in the California. I wanted to capture that smoggy feel of the air we had for so long.

I’ve always liked the idea of these two heavyweights of Maastrichtian North America have a standoff, where neither would engage the other. I did want to make to Alamosaurus look as intimidating as possible in a fairly neutral pose. I did not want it to look over dramatic. This had been an idea I have had for many years, with an early version of this idea (an Alamosaurus walking by a pair of resting young Tyrannosaurs) having been painted in 2013, which I never completed.

I applied a lot of the atmosphere with my airbrushes and went into the little details with color pencils.

I might revisit this idea in the future.

Completed in late September 2018.

Done using acrylics, color pencils and Photoshop CC.

Is that rex based off the coloration of WWD? cause it sorta looks similar in the lighting.

but this is amazing!

It definitely is. I do love the coloration of the WWD Tyrannosaurus.

So uh, showed this to some people on Discord, apparently your rex isn’t a rex and it’s a carcharodontosaurid.

They said it wasn’t a tyrannosaur cause the arms were too long and the head didn’t look like a Tyrannosaurus.

Tyrannosaurus could take down an adult Alamosaurus by itself

Your rex coloration wasn’t what it looked like

It wasn’t Tyrannosaurus because it had feathers

The teeth were off because they were like, an inch shorter than what the skeletons showed.

there’s more but these are the major points.

I’m surprised they can tell the shape of the head and length of the teeth from that angle, lol

Cool! I really like this. There’s not enough paleo-art of T. rex and Alamosaurus having a tense staring contest

Looks fantastic, love the rusty red sky/background. Really does look like a wildfire to add to the dramatic dino-tension.
