“The Omen of a Snapping Twig”

Quetzalcoatlus northropi, Leptoceratops gracilis, Trierarchuncus prairiensis. An acrylic painting of a resting family of Leptoceratops being altered by a Trierarchuncus that a potential predator is nearby, namely the Slenderdactyl.

This was an idea I had sometime last year for a forest-scape piece involving the Slenderdactyl, featuring some of the smaller, less popular denizens of Maastrichtian North America. The design of the Trierarchuncus was based on the wonderful sculptural reconstruction Boban Filipovic did of the animal. There is one of them peeking outside of its burrow to see what the commotion is all about.

I have had an inkling to do a scene involving a ceratopsian and its brood for a while now so I decided to try it out here with the Leptoceratops. A mated pair are resting with their small brood between them, as the male takes notice of the alarm call of a Trierarchuncus.

Slenderdactyl himself is just taking a stroll down the dark woods he haunts, not bothering in being stealthy. Thought that does not mean he won’t pass up an opportunity of snatching up any small animals too slow to get away from his reach.
