Description Well I finally updated this and submitted it for print

Gippsland waterdragons, fairy belle orchids, a little butterfly I haven't identified yet But we see them often, especially by the water. This was inspired by the tropical rain forest section of the National Botanical Gardens in Canberra, a beautiful place if you're ever in the area. I love the walk through the rainforest...and these lizards are all over the park, it's quite an experience to picnic with little dinosaur lookalikes running around through the bushes They're quite bold.

Image updated 11-2006.

Again seeing this now in a larger format is like WOAH. Really superbly painted. What a lush, amazing, and exotic world you've created. The waterfall is also very realistic.

OMG, what a sweet comment! Thank you for that
I need to post an update on this sometime, I'll probably just replace this with the new version, though, rather than reposting anew. I've reworked the lighting in the midground where the little lizard is standing on the ledge, it needed brighter light there
And YES, I love painting water!

I often re work too, sometimes I find it better to leave a piece as it is, and then after not looking at it for a while it's easier to see where I need to make changes....it never works when I stare at it too long lol....and often it is someone else that can see something obvious that needs reworking that you can't see because you've looked at it too much...I think the piece is great as it is, but you're right there is always room for an improvement, and light and shading changes....your work is amazing.

You're right, it really helps to take a break from a piece of work...and I've had that experience of staring at something so long I lose perspective, oh, boy...too often!

I read somewhere that it helps to flip your work over (well, if you're working digitally, anyway! I guess you could look at traditional work in the mirror and get the same effect) It's disconcerting to see your work in mirror image, but it does help to pick up things that are a bit 'off'.

When I'm between works I find myself going back and reworking some of my older pieces. It's nice to rethink some of those old problems with more experience under my belt I really enjoy that.

Flipping over your work...yep, I have done that before too, and boy does it look different back to front lol.
It's an excellent way to pinpoint flaws....I'd love to try my hand at nature scenes like yours.
I am doing exactly what you do...re working old pieces When I;m done they bare no resemblance to the original work but usually look ten times better.

MBoulad In reply to Trinity23 [2007-01-24 12:39:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I really enjoy going back to an old piece like that, glad I'm not the only person who does that

You should try a nature scene just for fun, I bet you'd enjoy it. Half the fun for me is studying each animal or plant before I start I really enjoy reading about what I'm going to paint to get a feel for it beforehand.

Trinity23 In reply to MBoulad [2007-01-24 13:28:13 +0000 UTC]

You know I do have some really old natur stuff that I did, like parrots etc, but it's all in pencil, and my scanner quit working.
I havent tried it in psp...yet
You know I've just really taken to your artwork, your style is appealing to me, I love the way you shade, and re working a piece does make alot of difference for sure.
I can see you aren't scared to push th colors to ectreme in some of your scenes making the most of natural/nature colors.....
If only I could show you the enourmous golden eagle sunset I did in pencil a few years back..the colors were natural, but as bold and brilliant as you could get ( purples/blues/oranges)....I sold that pic way too cheap....I wish I could get it back now .
Maybe I should pay the owner a visit and get a snapshot of it with my digi cam.

Wah, I'm sorry I'm so slow answering, I've gotten my comments in a muddle again

I'd love to see some of your pencil work, maybe you could use the digital camera since the scanner is broken? I've noticed a lot of people do that instead of scanning Though I'd probably prefer using the scanner myself, it seems a bit easier in some ways...though I was disappointed at how it picked up the colour of my hedgehog picture recently. It came out really washed out, the colours are more vivid on the actual work.

I'd love to see the eagle/sunset scene, I hope you get a picture of it!

Thank you for the compliment I love how some people use colour expressively and envy that ability as I tend to work more to 'what I see' rather than 'what I feel' when it comes to colouring. It's just what comes naturally for me. It's useful for some things, but not for others I love your colour sense, it's very expressive! I should stretch myself a bit more in that area (working expressively, I mean)

Well...now since I have my computer back I cannot install the camera either.....no cam no scanner LOL...I will work on it, i think its a prob with windows, i have USB errors but the USB's are fine with audio...tried drivers etc....i must be missing something and have given it a rest for a few days it was driving me insane trying to work it out.....
I know what you mean about expressive with color....in the "old pub" picture that I did in pencil you see the colors are very tame.....I found it hard to do that one because i got bored with no color, but I think I got very good depth with it anyway, I like my lights/darks contrasts in ever piece.
I love you work and how you manage to keep the colors softer, i do admire that, I just cant do that myself...it's all in our own individual style...not necessarily taste...although i'd like to draw like you do...i dont think my style will allow me to.
i'm happy with what I've done, I've created more in the last 4 years than i have in my whole life
Thanx for the comments and you know i think your art is just awesome!

MBoulad In reply to PatGoltz [2006-10-30 07:14:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I might need help at some point. I tried printing it off on my home printer (probably not calibrated properly) and it came out so dark that I've wanted to lighten it before uploading it for printing...I find it hard to know how it will look when it's printed properly. Maybe I should just upload it and ask advice from the print folks? I don't know if they give it though!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PatGoltz In reply to MBoulad [2006-10-31 12:24:05 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. I have seen that the prints pretty much turn out the way the file you upload looks. You could lighten it, especially if you have a MAC. You can also contact them for help, but the acceptance or rejection of a print file is done automatically. They do tend to be very helpful, but I don't know how much good that would do. You could try ftp'ing it over and ask them to look at the file before you use it. I usually don't ftp, though, and there is another way. I think you're the one who mentioned difficulty with ftp.

Very well done, I like how the water has white to it but still looks like its falling pretty calmly, that pretty difficult, usually when you do that the water begins to look like it has a very strong current.

Great attention to details The coloring looks flawless! A lot of work was put into this and anyone can tell by looking Hard to say which part of the pic I like most, but if I had to choose one, it'd be the flowers. They're what first caught my attention with their light purple colored charm ^^ Nice work

ftp drove me crazy..........I finally got a site to work for me, but it was a trial offer and I couldn't afford to buy it when it ran out. Our internet connection is fast enough right now that I just upload straight to DA. I'm looking forward to your prints. I think I may need a Christmas present or 2 for me!

I did the stupidest thing...twice. I had to zip up a file to submit for a contest somewhere else (nope, I don't know how to zip up a file!) and accidently zipped up my entire wip folder. And sent it. Accidently. Honest to God, I did that.

That's bad, but then I accidently sent that same file yesterday instead of the painting. Yes, I'm dangerous on a computer, I am, ROFL! It's like I Love Lucy meets Deviant Art, eh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to MBoulad [2006-02-07 13:36:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh, heavens, I don't even know how to start zipping a file! But I'm similar when it comes to this stuff. Does it take special software? I know where I used to work the PR department would zip some things..........I really wanted to work in that office, but they weren't ready to consider getting an artist to do some stuff in house until just before I moved! Did you ever get the painting zipped and sent?

I meant to add something in the other Comment about aspect ratios. Yep some things you just can't do a lot with. I have trimmed a couple of mine to make them fit a broader range of prints, but I hate to do too much. I have sold 4 prints in about a year??? Some people seem to sell a lot. I'm going to take time and try to offer some things as calenders, puzzles, mugs, maybe mouse pads if they will fit the all important ratios! I'm also going to look into whether I want to offer anything else from my gallery as prints. So far my little freelance venture is in the red!

No, though I wish it was. I missed the boat on that years ago, though. Life's like that sometimes

I'm happy with what I can get now, I have no aspirations...I just paint for me. In a way I'm lucky, I can do what I like and don't have to worry about what someone else wants me to paint. That IS lucky, isn't it
