Hi SCC...yeah, it's digital oil from Painter IX. This program really is fantastic (not that I have any experience with other proggies LOL) I'm blown away at the range of media and different effects you can get with this program, it's hard to stick to one media for too long as there are so many to try out!

I WISH I'd tried one of these programs sooner, I feel like I've been missing out! It's so fun

Is it called just painter, or is it the program called Corel painter?
I tried a program caled corel painter at school ( an old version thou) but it had many cool effects like the one you mentioned

yeah, it's corel painter IX. I hadn't tried a digital painting proggie until this one, so it's all news to me.

I'm pretty excited about the digital oils, it's neat. I think I'll try using it for my next work too. I want to try getting a better handle on the impasto effects.

Wow, this program IS great!! I love the way the colors blend, and the blender!! Thats something I have missed from real life painting, the abilety to blend colors to get a wide range of that color. Most people think Adobe PhotoShop is the ultimate art program, and I agree, it's great. But this program might have changed my mind

Yea! I'm such a goof, I'm actually excited you like Painter LOL

I'd like to give Photoshop a try, but don't have a copy I've heard good things about it, and seen a lot of people seem to prefer it to Painter...but I guess I should stick to one program until I feel proficient with it. There's SO much to learn in just this one program!

For blending, I've been using the smear tool a LOT, and played around with using it at different opacity and sizes. I really enjoyed using it on the anemone for my ocean scene, set to a high opacity to pull the colors together at the beginning, then going back with it set to a really low opacity (about 18%) to do the finer blending later on. That blender set to a low opacity is absolutely KEWL to work with, it feels a bit like polishing a stone . I really enjoyed that part, it was very intensive work...the kind I like best. The smear tool is also really nice to use for a blur effect around the edges of some things, set to a low opacity and a very large size. With the meerkats fur, after blending, I've used it that way to help create depth and volume at the turning of an edge (hope that makes sense!) then going back to crisp up the fine details afterwards.

Sorry, I tend to go on a bit about this sort of stuff...I'm just so excited about everything I'm learning at the moment! I hope you're having as much fun as I am!

All these art programs are way to expensive, so I just download them Elegal and wrong, I know. But with the lack of money, I would have stuck to the free program Open Canvas instead, so they wouldn't earn a dime on me anyway. So I don't see it as stealing, cause I don't take something they produced that costed money either. They just didn't get me as a customer... errr. rant

Thanks for sharing how you do stuff. I love listening to how others do it, to get an insight in how I can do it and learn from it. The best way to learn is to listen to others, then try and fail + combine that with past experience and random tryouts.
I usualy just use the paint brush, with allot of different brushes and setings. I also use the blur aome, but not that much.
This program is different from PhotoShop in so many ways, but very alike in the setings, so I'm luckely able to find my way in it. Learning how to use PhotoShop on my own was kinda hard, but worth it =^_^=
