Description Painted this as a gift for Benjamin's Aunt. I thought she would like a picture of some gumnut babies. Australia's equivilant to Beatrix Potter cuteness. No one has heard fo them in the UK, but they are very popular in Oz I've been told. Link ---> [link] is May Gibb's picture I took this from.

Acrylic Inks and gold pen. November 2007

Did a bit more work on the golding last night. I wanted to make the gum tree bark look more like skin.

Well I'm not entirely sure exactly what they are. Little spirits that live in the gumnut trees in Australia. Well I shall soon find out! Lots of gum tree fairy exploring coming up!

You just keep these coming, don't ya? Well done on this piece. Is that a turtle I see clinging onto a leaf?

Thanks! Turtle?! He's slightly out of place. My aquatic world insists on creeping into everything no matter what subject matter is on the page. Must have a talk to that turtle!

Thanks Dmitry! by yellow spot, d'you mean the sun?! I was really experimenting with this one. Think I'd do somethings differently next time.

I really meant a cool yellow spot but not a sun! Seriously! It reminds me a very very positive energy! I simply like a yellow color in painting!

If you have any further interest in Australian children's books and great drawings, check out 'The Magic Pudding' by Norman Lindsay....I don't think you'd be disappointed...it's another classic.

Ben's Mum is a Norman Lindsay fanatic, so I will get her to show me this.

'Snugglepot and Cuddlepie' is an Australian classic. I imagine when it was written it would have been known in the UK because during and before WWII Australia was still very much part of the British empire. I would imagine most Australians no longer know of the work either, sadly. It features 'Banskia men' as ogres and they terrified me as a child. I couldn't walk past a banskia tree without being frightened! I've always had an overactive imagination! Wonderful that you've created a work like this

I'm really glad you like it. I shall soon be educated to the ways of Australia no doubt! So there may be a few more Aussie themes coming out in my work over the next few months!!
