Description This is my new painting experimentation in Painter X. I tried to mimic the oil on canvas traditional technique using rich Painter's toolset. The work was done on the ONE LAYER and took about 12 hours to complete. Also I didn't use airbrush or any usual digital tricks.

You see the 50% of the original size.

I hope you like it, guys. Personally I'm happy how it turned out. Full view is strongly suggested.

Fantastic job bud. I can never get myself to work on one layer... I always add stuff in over it and merge down in case I fudge it up

Andr-Sar In reply to Rahll [2007-08-06 18:03:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you much for the comment. I'm glad that you like it.

I find in landscape paintings easier to work with one layer. The constant switching of the layers is really annoying, specially when there're 20 or more of them. Besides, you can gain interesting unpredictable effects in some cases. For example, the case when it is only 1 undo option available at each moment.

By the way, I will gladly hear any critiques you have on this work.

Rahll In reply to Andr-Sar [2007-08-06 18:44:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know what you mean. I like getting those random unpredictable effects sometimes.

As for a critique... The composition is massive. I like it, but the upper right sky, and the lower left land area both seem really empty. Because of what this is, it still works well, and it's mostly a personal preference. You could always throw some kind of planet in the sky to the right, on the horizon or something... And for the land on the left, maybe some sort of really wide canyon that stretches to the distance? Maybe even some ice at the bottom hinting at a ancient frozen river?

Andr-Sar In reply to Rahll [2007-08-07 08:36:17 +0000 UTC]

What is more disturbing is brightness\contrast level in this image. As you can notice, there are no absolutely black areas at all. And from the distance it seems that the picture tend to look dull.

And, of course, that feeling of emptiness. It frightens off most viewers. But obviously I can't simply add heavy clouds, trees and etc. because it is Mars. And additional landscape texturing wouldn't have changed something. But your idea with ice covering is really might be helpful.

So I guess I did the picture just more suitable for for artists or scientists than for casuals.

It's still a wonderful piece, I like it a lot. I more or less try to relay to you what my instructors at my school would probably say. Although I make suggestions, it doesn't necessarily mean it'll make it better, they're just things you could do if you wanted to, the outcome is totally unpredictable. The ice idea is really intriguing, though

Even before I read your comment, I was thinking about how much it looked like a traditional painting. And I don't find it hard to believe that it was on one layer because I used to the same thing...Until I finally realised what layers were for and suddenly made digital art a lot easier.

It's good how you made your own lens flare from scratch too, I see many good space artists make their own unique ones that really look more appropriate than the default ones in Photoshop.
