Description I've just started almost five huge paintings, but their progress is slow. So I've decided to do something quick to divert my attention.

~2 crazy hours of brushing with a speed of light. Painter X. Hope you like it somehow.

Full view strongly suggested, as always.

You must be the master of speed painting or something.

The effect is really quite affective; the sketchiness setting the motion to it all. It seems to empathise with the concept of crashing with the ship. It also gives it a 'natural' feel, like you enjoyed making it; which also makes me enjoy it.

I almost thought it was a traditional style painting at first. Well I understand that it was done quickly, so it looks good considering it was done in a short period of time. Nice balance between the cool blue planet and the warm orange glow on the other side.

Oh well, It gives you a break from those time-consuming ones. Sometimes I just draw random stuff in Photoshop that I wouldn't dream of submitting...But sometimes I get carried away and upload the formal version anyway.

I liked it, specially those mountains in the right, but I think its too empty, maybe some more stars or nebula would do some good.
But its really nice

I'm inspired, again XD thank you for that

I'm lovin Painter so far, I think I'm abusing the digital airbrush a bit too much though

Andr-Sar In reply to PearlPhoenix [2007-08-01 12:16:45 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad, only don't form a habit.

Painter's brushes are absolutely unpredictable. After I spent much time on tweaking I still get weird results. Lol. Those crazy developers...

PearlPhoenix In reply to Andr-Sar [2007-08-01 16:52:53 +0000 UTC]

seriously XD

the digital airbrush can make harder shadows if used repeatedly, I thought it remained soft all the time I think the developers are obsessed with making painting as realistic as possible

Andr-Sar In reply to PearlPhoenix [2007-08-01 17:22:37 +0000 UTC]

Realistic digital painting - sounds like "realistic digital sex".

I've noticed during this painting that airbrush doesn't act properly on empty clear layers. It had strange burned edges instead of the soft covering. Also I don't like that smudging affects opacity color and how rendered grainess affects other options of the brush.

But all still run much smoothly in compare to Photoshop. I freely brush up to 6000 px image size. Just need to mess a little longer and everything will be fine.

I saw Ryan's Church technique in Painter recently in his Gnomon Workshop training DVDs. He uses one layer as a basis and everytime he's going to add details he creates a new on top layer, paint on it and then drop (merge). Repeat until full artistic satisfaction. I specially like how he explains his actions and composition: "Well, we have two guys. One small guy is that upper craft, and there's a huge guy which we have to make looks huge in compare to this small guy..."

LOL "Realistic digital painting - sounds like "realistic digital sex"."

What the hell Andrey, THAT DOESN'T MAKE POSSIBLE

You just pretty much summed up some things I dislike about painter lol. I'm so used to photoshop's airbrushes, they spread so much nicer than Painter. So I pretty much make final touches in photoshop when it comes to effects like this. I kinda do like the grain effect because it adds some texture effect to humanoid skin but some of the brush edges are too blurry while others are too pixelated, ITS ANNOYING lol so I use the smooth ink pen to recover from that.

Ryan Church is awesome... and that technique you mentioned, I actually tried that before. here > [link] except I did not paint over all lines. It is really nice technique, I'm just too bonded to my blending techniques...I'm so afraid I'll forget how to color!!! lol That's just me though

Andr-Sar In reply to PearlPhoenix [2007-08-01 22:20:57 +0000 UTC]

I want to achieve such look. I suppose, this is a traditional oil technique, which is more suitable for portraits/indoor scenes. The most problematic part of the simulation is certainly texture of the canvas. On the other hand, I do like vibrant colors, what is not quite often seen in realistic paintings.

Yep, airbrush is good for shading of the skin. But, as everything, should be used carefully to preserve a nice overall texture.

And may I ask why you put that huge watermark on your images?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PearlPhoenix In reply to Andr-Sar [2007-08-01 22:34:05 +0000 UTC]

I tried achieving that look myself without the distraction of extreme contrast/lighting so that the character can be SEEN. I need to learn that more...

"And may I ask why you put that huge watermark on your images?"

ah dammit I was afraid you'd ask ...

because I'm REALLY paranoid :/ especially when displaying this character. I don't want some asstard to go around claiming my character or stealing my material which is important for my graphic novel. I've dealt with art theft and it makes me angry...but I laugh when the thief leaves the watermark alone

I would probably not watermark if I was actually very popular, because then people would recognize my art

popular as in 1million pageviews.
