It was shot from a distance. I sometimes talk to my subjects, but their most natural poses are when they don't know that they are being photographed; we want to be able to make up a story, not just collect faces. It's also a bit more challenging, because the "moment" is over very quickly.

No, there would have been no point. Even though you probably can't tell from the photograph, the man was, at the time, sharing his food with another homeless person standing next to him on the bench.
