IMO, I think the image could have been better if there was a stronger light source at the face of your subject. Not much just a little more to add to the contrast. The fingers in the corner of the image bugs me a little. Takes away from the overall image. That said, great subject matter. I think more light would have picked up on more of the texture in his face. I like that you chose it to be in B&W. I think it suits your subject well.

Yes, that's true. It was, as I recall, a pretty cloudy day, and his hat was creating a soft shadow over his face. His fingers got in the frame because he was moving his arms a lot while talking to me. Still the best shot from the series I took of him, though. I guess it's a combination of luck and a sort of "visual athletics" that create a compelling shot of this subject matter; this perticular photograph being nowhere near perfect, but still "deviation-able".

I agree. Based on your shooting conditions, I'd say you did an admirable job. Been in that situation myself.

Of course, as long as you give my image credit. He probably hasn't been photographed often (as would be the case with a movie star or musician), and so this particular photograph's subject is rather unique. If the internet were abundant with images of him, I really wouldn't care, but in this case I do.

I am comparing this to the other photo I just commented (don't know whether you can find the comment). But to my eye, the focus seems to a bit off here as well (thinking of the classical focus in the eyes mantra). The nose tip seems to be a bit more in focus than the eyes. To me, that makes a what could have been a great picture, an average one. (still way better than many hobbyist pictures I have seen!). Keep up the good work!

Thanks again for taking the time to write a comment. As was the problem with the other image, I found this a bit out of focus shot, out of the other better focused shots I took of him, to be the most revealing of the way I perceived him. From what I can tell the focus lands a bit further away than his eyes are, but I might be mistaken.

His story? I was going through a village in Maramures, Transylvania, and his face seemed very expressive to me. I approached him for a photograph, and this shot was taken while he was explaining that he is just an old gypsy, and that there is no reason for me to take his portrait. He was humble, and I felt that this particular shot portrays his raw honesty most accurately.
