Description Waternoose's Factory for Imaginary Monsters! (cue dinky piano theme)

I couldn't help but notice that the concept, design and creatures of Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends have more than a coincidental resemblance to Monsters, Inc.! Both shows are about human kids thinking up imaginary creatures, and rules for the world the creatures live in, isolated from the kids. The main differance is that in Foster's, everyone knows what the creatures are really like, and live and speak with them on a daily basis.

I don't think the show will be even a little popular, but I was intrigued by the "new" animation technique used for the show. Will flash cartons replace the traditionally drawn ones?

And this was all the way back from 2004? This is really early for fhif (which was new at the time, currently 15 years old) to have fan art but at the same time pixar

Hehehe. I love this movie and I have no idea why but every time at the end I feel like I'm gonna start to bawl! Oh great. My favourite part is at the end where Mike is trying to get that kid to laugh and the kid is just like "wtf?"

This is almost 4.5 years old and I'm amused you say that you think the show won't "be even a little popular." >: D

Wasn't there another deviation on this site that had Sulley meeting Eduardo and others from Foster's Home...? I know I saw it here once, but I can't find it anywhere.

Wait, before I click send... *searches favorites* ...I found it! [link] You had the idea two years before they did!

I never would've put the two together. Really nice conversion. At first I hated the idea that it was all digital and flash-like, but it works I guess. I think there's some toon shaded 3d cg stuff in there too.

Yeah I think the premeire was about all the story line you coudl get outta that cartoon. But i thought it was cute. Frankie and the big lanky red guy were my favs. Cute idea to make Mosnters Inc in that form

Frankie's the perfect addition to the show. She balances out the cast in gender, is a great contrast to the other more naive characters, and I believe, has one of the best personalities featured. The red guy, whose name I forget, was very sweet and cute in his own right, but became very annoying when he kept apologizing all the time.

Yeah, I was fortunate to watch the premiere, and I do feel that that that was most of the story we're ever gonna get. The plots for the episodes seem haphazardly written in the form of a Three-Stooges slapstick.

I checked that series out on the internet. That "new" animation style reminds me a lot of the really super cheapo animation of the crummier cartoons of my childhood, though I do think it's done better than they were. Simplicity has its own charm. Kinda nifty the way you coalesced these two, though.

andrewk In reply to Rayfan [2004-08-21 21:48:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, McCracken's style harkens back to the old UPA animated cartoons, but he does them in a very different way, more dynamic and vibrant. This evolution to Flash seems natural for him, but I just wish he'd evolve the story with it.

I agree, this style is a lot more lively and it does work quite well. I haven't seen enough of the show to have an opinion about the story though.

I haven't seen the Foster's cartoon yet, but I did see a few pics in a magazine. I had to say the intro in Monsters Inc. almost looked similar in style. I like it!

I actually can't see the resemblance between Monsters Inc. and Foster's. Maybe it's because I have this strange amount of loathing and putrid hate towards the "flashier"(MX) show? Well, not quite. The only thing I'm getting from both of them is monsters.... But I won't go into more because this is for commenting, not a debate or soapbox.

It's cool that you got the idea to do these three in the style. The idea is neat, but at least now I know how you got it.

They so look like they'd fit into the show.

That's interesting, the way they bear such a resemblance...I'm assuming this is a Disney and/or Pixar carton? I mean cartoon? I think my favorite part about the blue monster is his hand, how it defines such form even though it's not actually shaded...That's something I find quite hard to accomplish. Typo and all, I like what you've done with this picture. The cut and paste tone is really nice, to me!

andrewk In reply to espers [2004-08-21 01:20:01 +0000 UTC]

Nope, Foster's completely unrelated to Pixar. It's the new show created by Craig McCracken (PPG), on Cartoon Network. It is a coincidence they have so much in common, but those similarities are driving me crazy!

Man, now that you've pointed this particular show out to me...It's driving me crazy too! Do you think Pixar might get in a bit of a tizzy over copyright issues...? Or maybe it's a secret underground collaboration...hmmm....O_o Not quite sure what to think there...

andrewk In reply to espers [2004-08-21 23:25:38 +0000 UTC]

I doubt Pixar ever surveys other companies like CN for copyright issues. I just have this feeling.

Haha, aaw, thats so cute. Awesome style here - looks cut out from paper. Yeah, I hope flash cartoons dont replace normal ones, but I mean, I spose that's like a person with a filing job a couple years ago saying 'I hope computers dont replace humans doing filing!'

But I think that they might develop better and more cost effective ways of doing tradtional cartoons. Like, I've noticed some cartoon serieses using 3D cell shading, so I think that might be where the industry's heading.

well done. you've definately succesfully simulated the look of the show and it's a nice look piece also. the dark black lines on uh..the big blue one(excuse my poor memory) are rubbing me the wrong way. i wish maybe they were a little thicker and less sharp, perhaps? they look like they're just drawn overtop on him. The other two look great though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrewk In reply to TheABones [2004-08-21 00:06:06 +0000 UTC]

I overlayed the dark lines with a darker shade of that blue, so they wouldn't pop out so much. I also made the ends of the lines thinner for width variety. I haven't uploaded the revised pic, though.
