Description I have just started my career in working with small groups of children and everyday is a cuteness overload. I'm so excited. It also means, no more telephone surveys!! I will miss talking to fascinating strangers (like those who diagnose the origins of my name in less than 5 seconds) but I'm so ready to move on to a real job. I will keep these historical comics going because I'm still having a ball with them.

Here is a win for Russia which I think is appropriate. The subject was an American but during the Cold War he changed his allegiance and never came back.

There was a man by the name of Edward Lee Howard who was a member of the CIA during the Cold War. In the early 1980s, he was forced to resign with bitterness due to some bad drinking habits. I’m not sure if this was a turning point for him to show his true colors or just a bad habit coming out of the closet. It turns out that within the next year it had come to the CIA’s attention that Howard was selling secret information to the Soviets. Howard’s good name then started taking a serious turn when his association with a member of the K. G. B. (once an American) became known as well.

All of his activity was now under surveillance. So Howard decided to make a run for it and ditch his homeland. Yet how does one pull the wool over the eyes of the CIA and FBI in a time like this? The answer is one of the simplest… a toilet plunger, a Styrofoam head, a wig, a coat hanger, and a coat.

In 1985, Mr. Howard and his wife (Mary) were taking a pleasant drive in the streets of New Mexico with the FBI team not too far behind. Little did the agents know that during the drive Mr. Howard had transformed himself into a dummy that made a quiet return home while he left the country. The transition took place when his wife (the driver) took a sharp turn around a corner and in less than five seconds Mr. Howard bails out and Mrs. Howard props up the already made decoy. When the FBI comes around to follow, they notice nothing. Days later, Mrs. Howard keeps the disguise going by making a phone call to an answering machine and puts on a recording of her husband’s voice. Before the CIA knew it, Mr. Howard had stepped into the Soviet embassy and announced he defected from the USA.

The whole affair was damaging to the CIA spy network in the Soviet Union as this traitor had managed to slip through their fingers. Mr. Howard spent the rest of his life as an ex-spy in Russia with no further excitement. He claims that he ran only to avoid being a scapegoat of another defecting agent to the USSR. Whatever the truth we may never know as Howard died ten years ago in Moscow.

The dummy disguise wasn’t discovered until much later. I doubt Howard would have made it out of the country otherwise. I couldn’t resist the idea of the agents pulling the car over and handling the homemade dummy on the spot.

If there is anyone that invented trolling, it’s Russia.

Ah, yes.

I must agree that Ivan would be the guy to invent trolling. Or at least a co-founder...

I think you can say so. I drew the girl as the Nyotalia or female version of Russia. I like to think of her as Sister Russia.

Thanks for clearing it up. Forgive my stupidity.

No need to apologize. It was pretty vague in the comic because I didn't see it as that important. I am starting to realize that I probably could start using the Fem versions of the countries more to play roles in historical events.

That's a cool story, thanks for sharing! I want to read some more into it. That kind of peace movement reminds me of the Candy Bomber that took place when WW2 had ended. This American bomber would fly over East Germany (occupied by the Soviets) and drop candy for the children.

Also, whose the real dummy? The one with a foam brain, or the one in the passenger seat?

But one was in the pursuing car.

That being said, he does look pretty cool with the black suit.

Hah, did you make the dummy and wife resemble Russia on purpose?

Oh my, the egos of that FBI team must have been greatly wounded when they found out what had happened. XD
