Description WW2 is just fully of bizarre weapons isn’t it? I can’t remember the last time I did a fail for America so guess what? It’s his turn again.

As you know, WW2 started rolling not to long after WW1. The trench warfare was still fresh in everyone’s minds and many were doing what they could to avoid a repeat. An inventor from Texas, A. J. Richardson, had the idea around 1936 of a tank that would decrease the chances of a stalemate on No Man’s Land. The idea was to have a tank be in the shape of a ball that is heavily armored and that could roll out onto the battle field to make way for footmen soldiers. The outside would have two rotating spheres on either side to propel the tank forward. The inside would be hollow and like a cab that two men could sit in. I first had the impression of the tank being like a hamster ball except the inner sphere is stationary so that the soldiers can fire the guns. The Tumbleweed Tank was designed to be impenetrable to firearms as to its curved outer shell and to protect the inside from poisonous gas to boot.

Now for the problem. This tank only got as far as an idea since no prototype was ever made because Richardson forgot one important factor. Whoever was inside the tank wouldn’t be able to see what was going outside meaning… they would be firing haphazardly in every direction to both friend and foe without realizing it. The Tumbleweed Tank would be too disastrous and unpredictable to nearby friendly troops.

So the idea was scrapped. Although, Germany adapted the idea and made his own ball tank later on the in the war.

you know this could actually work if it was in a transportation mode. just put a squad in it and point em in a deriction and they could pose as a distraction/recon

learned from WWII and did I mentioned if the trap for this tank was wide and deep enough that the wheels can't climb that its a problem but I still love the fun looking design of this vintage tech...

I actually made a comic for that plan but there isn't enough information for me to really finish it. It's a mystery.

Still pretty cool how they actually made one.

Hey, a funny fact. Go to wikipedia and search kugelpanzer.
A german concept, even got a prototype of it. You'll love it.

Oh my goodness, the kugelpanzer is like my forgotten child!! I started the comic for it but then stopped because I couldn't find enough background info on it. I became so frustrated because the kugelpanzer still exists but studies can't be done on it. I would like to know more about it.

I believe you would It looks like you're realy
into the prototypes (me to) You'll probebly like
this to, the germans where into prototypes just a
bit. The neubaufahrzeug is realy something, i can't
realy explain, just a real german idea.

I pretty much like funny and crazy stories from history. The Germans did have a thing about super sizing their tanks didn't they? This neubaufahrzeug was new to me so thanks for sharing!

Aw man I love your comics so much! Once I get my bank account I'm going to be buying each one of your books! ^^ <3

If your doing a fourth one, will there be more of China in it~? plus more hilarious relationship with America and Britain?

What an interesting idea! A pity no decent form of observation was created because that could have been a really cool tank! XD

andrielisilien In reply to Willsormiston [2012-07-20 00:03:10 +0000 UTC]

I agree, it was a revolutionary idea to completely change the shape of the tank. Even if the plan didn't work out I think it would have been cool to have a prototype.

outlire [2012-07-16 23:46:11 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha! This is funny, and sounds like something America would do. He would boast about it being a good idea, but mess it up. He forgot the windows.

It kind of ended up like a hamster ball since it went in all directions depending on the organisms (people in the tank, 1 hamster in the hamster ball) actions. The middle will have to be stationary, or people will get dizzy. It should have a tumbleweed design, too, to camouflage with the environment so the people can sneak up on their enemies.

andrielisilien In reply to outlire [2012-07-17 05:20:01 +0000 UTC]

hahaha!! I really like how you analyzed the contraption with "organisms actions" like that of a hamster ball. Took the words right out of my mouth

outlire In reply to andrielisilien [2012-07-19 05:08:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I think that's because I have pet hamsters. Only one hamster could be in a hamster ball, but more than 1 person could fit in a war tank.

......That is another insane and yet funny inventions........

If Germany adapted this and made his own tank balls, did they work successfully or not?
I think they failed.......

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrielisilien In reply to Kalafin99 [2012-07-16 21:31:39 +0000 UTC]

It's safe to say they didn't succeed because the last surviving German Ball Tank is in Russia now. I would like to do a comic on it but there is just nothing to go off on. There are no existing documents about the tank.

Kalafin99 In reply to andrielisilien [2012-07-16 23:05:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it may make a funny topic for comic, but if you don't have any documents about it, nobody will believe it....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrielisilien In reply to Kalafin99 [2012-07-17 05:22:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm not worried about people believing it. It's just I don't know what to say about the tank because the Russians won't let anyone take samples or inspect the tank. You can read about it here [link] with what little detail there is.

BloodyDragon7 [2012-07-16 00:27:43 +0000 UTC]

I see...but i think there is another problem....the guns could have dirt stuck inside of them and it can get stunk on the ground XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrielisilien In reply to BloodyDragon7 [2012-07-16 00:31:23 +0000 UTC]

That's what I thought at first but the outer shell would only rotate and move. The guns were part of the axis that was stationary. Does that make sense? This diagram probably explains it better [link]

BloodyDragon7 In reply to andrielisilien [2012-07-16 00:36:25 +0000 UTC]

ah i see...but to me it seems as though it could overheat fast...at least in my opinion...anyway the comic was funny as hell..xD America you need to think twice..or three times to be safe before idea..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrielisilien In reply to BloodyDragon7 [2012-07-16 00:43:38 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, the tank overheating wasn't mentioned in the articles I read but it could always happen. It would stink though because the engine was right there behind the soldiers on the inside.

Thanks for commenting

andrielisilien In reply to Starrulet [2012-07-16 00:15:00 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it really was but I suppose that windows or any kind of peephole would put the tank at risk for poisonous gas and other firearms to penetrate.

... I wonder if they would have been able to use it, if they'd installed cameras? (modern day cameras. Not ones that were around during WW2. I'm wondering if such a machine could work in present day.... I wonder too much. )
