Alternate/secret ending to Batman: Arkham City based on the line, "Even after everything you've done, I still would have saved you." Because only a true hero would show that kind of mercy to his greatest enemy… or his only friend, if you're looking at things from the Joker's point of view.

Many speculate, and it has been hinted within the comics, that Joker actually knows Batman's true identity, but protects it in order to continue to have someone to play with. He also protects Batman fiercely from other villains, considering Batman to be "his" and his alone. And I think that deep down, Batman knows it and can't help but to respond to the Joker's attachment by showing him mercy or pity, or even occasional kindness.
