Description .... Because Stayne was totally asking for it

In case you didn't know, this whole elbow-in-the-face is another moment taken from the crappy graphic novel. They do have cool ideas on how the scenes played out, but the execution totally fails.

That being said, I have to admit that I personally think mine fails too. This one looks so ugly!!!! Especially the last panel. It really isn't clear what the heck is happening there. Of course, if you've seen the movie you know what happens, but the idea of adapting something is to do it in such a way that even those who doesn't know the source material understand what I'm trying to convey

*sigh*

Anyways, on the subject of technicalities, I might as well rant about how effects-only backgrounds are harder to make than backgrounds that actually has something on it. See, those speedlines in the background? It's hard to make those NOT look like a half-assed lazybum gradient job. This is probably why manga-style comic pages don't work all that well in colour... Or I'm just a nitpicky bastard who thinks everything is a problem.

Anyways. One more page to go!! Whoo-hoo!!

Ahaha... Yes, that ought to hurt. I blame the original comic rendition of the movie. It's more dramatic than just shoving him away anyway.

Oh yeah, and so I have an excuse to draw his hair hanging all over his face in the next page. Because he looks hot when his hair is messy

Oh yes, the comic. I did like the part too. XD
And yes, he's all sexy with his messy hair. But I am biased with liking men with long hair. :3
Also like the little yelps he makes.

Hee

Long haired men = awesome. On movies/comics/cartoons My opinion on men that I see in real life is hard to describe.

Not every man IRL looks good in long hair, I'll admit. But I have seen a few that could fit in movies quite well. Unfortunately you can't moon at those as one does with fictional characters or you'll end up being freaky. XD

Lol. You should have chibi stayne on this panel too, only with anime teary eyes with his hand outstretched in sadness.
Very well done. I like how you took a fresh approach in telling the story (though personally, I kind of like that bastardized comic) .__.

Oh, I only hate how it looked like a 5 year old drew the comic. It's semi-decent, except that the plot is too rushed (did they have page count limit or something?) and the art is horrible in my opinion.

Hey, didn't think of putting chibi-Stayne here because this was leading to the last page, which is my favourite dramatic moment ever, so... yeah. I'll go do that later

Yupz. They have an official movie graphic novel out. It's so bad and it pissed me off so much that I made this short comic sequence to make myself feel better. Coz... well, ranting and raving about it for hours on end won't do anyone any good.

The art is styled nicely, but remember the difference between manga-style and, well, American/Western art. I actually don't like manga-style, but prefer the traditional comic book or graphic novel...but if its the story-line that's bad, then its bad. XD

If its in the Borders bookstore in the next week I'm going to one, I'll read it. I only watched the movie anyways for Stayne/Hatter.

o__o Mother of God you're right. He's a demented Snape who's face keeps changing ever slightly!

I like the style but, shit man, its TOO FAST. They rushed it and the plot. Its ruined. The worst thing you can do to a graphic novel is rush the plot!

AngelERenoir In reply to Sahkmet [2010-11-18 21:32:23 +0000 UTC]

Inorite? I've had enough problems with not liking the artwork (ESPECIALLY the goddamn ever-changing faces) and I don't need the rushed up plot ruining it even more >___< Seriously, I don't get what's up with them hurrying the plot along. Do they have a page limit or something?

The book actually has about 100 pages but the graphic novel section takes up only about half of the book. The rest in the "behind the scenes" or "the making of" the book that includes rough sketches and the concept sketches of the other artists who "auditioned" for the project. My friend said the company's being a total cheapskate and picked the crappiest artist so they can pay him cheap and... I find it very hard not to agree with him We buy the book for the graphic novel. We don't really want to know who auditioned to be the artist and who ended up getting the job or their rough sketches. For art students like me, sure they're great because we're always encouraged to study other artist's sketches, but still... I think that whole behind the scenes section is rather pointless. They could've used those extra pages for more graphic novel.

Sahkmet In reply to AngelERenoir [2010-11-18 22:00:32 +0000 UTC]

Alot of grahpic novels do this. Even my 'Solomon Kane' and 'Batman' graphic novels *Batman: Vampire, The Return of the Dark Knight, Batman Year One, Joker the Devil's Advocate...* of types ALWAYS have pages at the back to show auditions, behindthescenes, and even people auditioning for the covers with their versions. Its actually a tradition that's been around for a looong while.

The Solomon Kane one is an example of people 'auditioning'. The guy who did it for the final product though, THATS what I would have picked anyways so there....however, obviously, the AiW novel problem is that its for the money, not for the art. At least it is a stepping-stone project that helps the artist's name float in the art world, which is usually a good thing *unless they did an extremely horrible comic hat's so bad its famous, which then would harm the artist's reputation*

AngelERenoir In reply to Sahkmet [2010-11-18 22:30:38 +0000 UTC]

LOL, we're actually having in-depth discussion about comics. It's fun, though

I know those behind the scene things were pretty common, though I still think what they did with AiW was unnecessary. The comic was so short it's not exactly worth showing all that "making of" stuff. I mean, the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest graphic novel that was released a few years back doesn't have all that behind the scene stuff, which makes me think that it was nothing more than pointless padding

Sahkmet In reply to AngelERenoir [2010-11-18 23:01:13 +0000 UTC]

All just for publicity it was. AiW is a big cashcow: delightful movie but still, the AiW theme has been always fodder-fuel-merchandising capabilities with the goth/scene/alternative underground etc. which has risen, since the 90's, to be quite 'normal' actually. Hence, you! *also AiW was a popular manga theme as well, even with hentai*

OH MY GOD WE ARE

Well, you don't immedieatlly appear to be a sterotypical goth girl, or a scene-girl, or any other those 'groups'. Hence referred to the last catagory, 'normal', as in 'society's view of average teenagers participating in life'.

AngelERenoir In reply to Sahkmet [2010-11-18 20:34:16 +0000 UTC]

I'm not hating on it because it 's not manga. Just because I draw in a manga-inspired style doesn't mean I'm one of those crazy "I hate it if it's not manga" purists I like any style of comic as long as they're good. Even my friends who like Western comic style thinks it sucks.

Here's my angry rant detailing what exactly I do not like about the graphic novel: [link] I don't want you to think I'm hating on stuff for no reason When Stayne looks like Tim Curry as Dr. Frank 'n Furter and Tarrant looks like he stole his nose from the Na'vi and Alice looks like a squishy human-shaped pillow, I think something is definitely wrong with the art.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sahkmet In reply to AngelERenoir [2010-11-18 20:44:38 +0000 UTC]

Like I said, if its other things as well. But yeah, I am precautionary, because I have met many of the 'I hate it if it's not manga' and they don't provide intelligent rational thought. XD

I see...so its the art, though styled artistically was rushed to create bad comic-flow and such.

Actually I LIKE the art style, but it appears there's also the problems with the fact that artist, no doubt, was under contract to make this merchandise. As such bad shoddiness with alot of things.

Plus Stayne looking like Frank? I don't think I would mine, I have crushes on BOTH of the. But I'll have to see Stayne when I will, can't be definite.

Is it already out? well, must be if you read and reviewed it, right?

You saw the scans in the link, right? I think those are ugly as heck, but it's still personal opinion so... yeah I can somewhat understand what they were trying to do, but it could be better. Especially because those scribbly look seems more like people being lazy as heck rather than "style"

It's been out for a while, although it really depends on the bookstores I had a really hard time trying to locate it because the bookstores in my place don't have it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sahkmet In reply to AngelERenoir [2010-11-18 21:08:37 +0000 UTC]

I luvs teh scribbly. All I care is plot progression. for instance, the manga adaption of the Vampire Hunter D series for the 1st book was GREAT: progressed like a book, not something quick. Slower, steady, made the reader absorb it. But after that it's downhill, so I'm not buying the copies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AngelERenoir In reply to Sahkmet [2010-11-18 21:47:44 +0000 UTC]

Me too, but it depends on the scribbles I really can't describe what exactly is the style I like. If I think something looks good, then it looks good, period

I agree with you about plot progression. I don't like it when plot goes too fast. That is why I prefer the manga story telling. In my opinion manga go more in-depth with character's feelings and emotions. My main problem with Western/American comics is the narration boxes. I do not like narration boxes because it makes it feels like I'm reading a picture book instead of a comic I prefer long monologues in dozens upon dozens of speech bubbles than narration boxes. Not all American comics do this, though, and I really appreciate those.

On the subject of plot pacing, there's a comic called "X-men Misfits" that I really have mixed feelings about. It has LOADS of narration boxes and has the storytelling style of Western comics, but has the look and style of manga. It's very problematic for me because it's just disjointed and the story is hurried along too fast because most of the story go in the text boxes. Loads of narration boxes do not go with manga style and it really is jarring

For me, I wasn't really raised on Manga, so for alot of them I glance through I can't identify with their faces: especially ones with more girly, love-story, or cute-yaoi plots. I can't stand the big eyes and occasionally the choppy hair, because their faces are not fleshy enough to make alot of emotive-looks. Then, those types who are more liek that than others have to rely on dialouge, which does in comparison look better and paced than a DC or Marvel comic book. I was raised kinda biased I guess, but that's how it is with me. Now I don't sterotypical superhero comics so much as the ones that take the western, or an arty style to devlop into characters.

See, this is why I'm picky with mangas and animes I watch. For example my favorite is Hellsing. [link] See, alucard's face and lots of other characters actually have a lot of real facial features incorpertated, showing depth to the face, and provide a lot of emotive looks to me.

another thing is that I don't like to read stuff like Fruitbasket or Naruto or Bleach. School-drama and such aren't my interest, so I generally just stay away and don't read those of course. However there is alot of exception for 80's and early 90's anime: its an older, different style plus it had the cyber-punk genre which is dark and gritty. Makes for some AWESOME THINGS.

Hey, same here! I was raised on manga and anime myself, so it sort of carried over to my art, but I am very picky about the series I follow. In fact, I hardly follow any manga series nowadays and I'm trying to go for something a tad closer to realism with my art. This comic here is sort of a practice for that manga-and-realism fusion style thing, but hey...
