Description I felt like to make this. Some people said that watermark ruins the picture or it's annoying, because it's in the middle of art and they can't see it well..

Honestly... the watermark is half transparent, if you try, you can see the picture well. And using watermarks is good, because it deters potential thieves more than just a tiny link in the corner where it's easier removable and so easier to steal...

True is that sometime even watermarks won't help, because people can just redraw it with their crappy way or they just draw the picture again by their own hand according to your art and so no need to mess up with watermarks.. but still in more cases it helps than not...

Watermark is in the middle or around main parts because those parts would be used the most in stolen work, so stop being mad about that it interferes in the main parts. It's supposed to work like that! To protect...

If you still dislike it, it's ok, i respect other's opinions, too... but... after your work will be stolen many times, i bet you'll start to use watermark happily...as i did =.=" even i hate the fact it ruins the pic, too...but i care about the protection more...

For some artworks, you can pay points to download larger versions without watermarks.

As a quote from a user on tumblr i saw. "If my watermarks annoy you and you think it’s rude, look elsewhere. I do not get paid to draw. Please rid yourself of any notion that it’s okay to approach a content creator and tell them what they can and can’t do in regards to their own creations, especially when they spend their time and energy to share these creations for free."Β

I don't mind a signature or subtle watermark/logo on your work but when it's covering up the main focus of the picture and smack bang in the middle, I am sorry but it ruins it Yes it will protect from SOME thieves but the most determined, will just edit it off.

I am sorry but those who knows how to use Photoshop can easily remove the watermark. then edit the artwork in a way that make is almost impossible to find the original artsit.

still better to have own name there no matter what.. and actually it is very easy to find the original artist if you know what to you to search in

It depends how it is edited, if they edit it enough and crop it, the usual reverse search lookups often don't pick up on it. I've seen stuff like that on here with saucenao/iqdbΒ

About a year ago, I did a lot of art, but didn't watermark anything. Someone came along, downloaded it all, and posted it up on their own site and made the date look like it was uploaded before I uploaded mine, and it caused my first deviantart account to be banned. Art thief won that round, but now I put a watermark on EVERYTHING I post, except for stamps because the size.

Oh! Sorry for another rant...

I saw ~Leon-Leidstein 's comment of "Assuming they can reproduce your work faithfully, they can just turn around and accuse YOU of theft, especially if their version of the pic is better in any way.". So, would the date on the of the submission NOT help?

I confronted one person of not creditin', tracin', and slightly modifyin' the artwork of another well-known artist, and they turned around and accused 2 other people of copyin' the work I was confrontin' them about. One thing, one of the works looked nothing like what they created. The idea is the same, but idea is not really a copyright. It was more of a concept, and that can't really be protected, which is true. The other one had somewhat the same pose, but the style was different and it was submitted way before the accuser posted theirs.

And for some reason, I can't find them anymore. I think they blocked me, but whatever.

ofcourse the date of the submission helps, no matter how better the art is... most of time people trace my sketches and colour it so it may look better, but admins take it down anyway, because i posted my cersion first XD

and if they blocked you, you still should be able to find it, unless it was taken down

Funny thing (which isn't so funny) is that I was lookin' through the "Newest" section an hour or 2 earlier today and found a lineart of a familiar picture - a crappily-retraced drawing of one of *DestinyBlue 's works. I reported the person to DA and an anti-art theft group 'cause the person claimed it as their own, even though I've heard the stuff goin' around that DA can't do much about it and I don't know much about the anti-theft group.

In my opinion, you're completely correct. I encourage watermarks. If an art piece is beautiful enough that a watermark is seen to obstruct a small important bit of it, then there shouldn't be complaints since one would already see the beauty of it. 'Cause I know no one would say anything about watermarked work that they don't find pretty at first glance.

What I suspect about some, NOT ALL, complainers: They have bad, thievin' intentions with beautiful, unwatermarked artwork. At least, that's what I suspect.

Unless a watermark is too obvious and covers essential elements of a picture, any determined thief could easily edit it out or crop it. Provided they even care the most irritating art thief on DA is somebody so obvius his front page and the comment section are flooded with angry complainers, even though the works he's stealing are not watermarked. But that's not the reason why he's still at large, that would be because the staff just ignores him and the daily reports he's getting. So really, bottom line is, a watermark won't help you protect anything other than your confidence.

There are specifically 5 people, myself included who share the same oppinion.
There are also 6 people who agree with you - quite coincidentally, at least two of them can't even draw the basic human figure.
There are five more people who are more neutral, but gravitate towards my side of the fence.

Also the number of faves are non indicative, as there's no way of telling how many people disagreed but didn't leave a comment.

A big, ugly, exaggerative watermark slapped on bad place can ruin a picture but I seriously don't get the negative attitudes toward watermarking. A logo in one corner or watermark so subtle you can hardly notice it shouldn't really be a problem (they can actually look pretty nice even!), especially when there seems to be more and more art thieves running around every passing minute.

I've seen a lot of art thieves steal pictures with a watermark on it.

Little kids don't care that there's a watermark, and most of the time they don't even remove it. All it does is make it easier to report. which is a good thing I suppose. But art theft is always seems to be obvious without it.

I don't care if people watermark their art because I understand their reasons. They can do whatever they want with their own art! I watermark my images because I'm paranoid. It's a sad reason, but it's true. I use to show off my art in a forum, but the members began bitching about my watermarks. I explained my reasons, we got into a fight. I got tired of it and stopped using my watermarks, only to have them point out every single flaw my art has (even the intentional ones), and make them the center of the piece...and when I followed their advices, they ignore my posts afterwards. They turn around and tell me 'no one wants to steal your shitty art', so then...why do they care if I watermark my images or not??

I'm alright with small watermarks, ones that somewhat blend in but are still visible or simply adding your name or something into the piece somewhere. But I hate the thick watermarks that completely cover the work. It just kind of ruins the piece.

I Maybe not that "good" enough for my artwork to be stolen. but i still use it. I seen each point of views of watermark lovers & haters. True, it might make your work ugly, but at least its slows down an art theft. Sadly there is Software that can remove an watermark. And to those who hate watermarks but also not a art theft, its a pain to see a watermark, and just like animechan21 said, there should be a way to customize how much the watermark is seen. or a way that the watermark is only be shown on the artwork, if the artwork is ether downloaded or right-clicked.

animechan21 [2011-12-21 06:59:53 +0000 UTC]

I think DA should really let deviants customize/adjust their default watermarks to encourage them to use this feature more often.
I dunno just my two cents.
I agree with everything you said, while I never saw any of my work outside of DA I still watermark them to make sure. I don't want to hear from a friend that someone posted my art on Tumbler and claiming it as theirs or something.

FlintENT [2011-12-20 09:47:47 +0000 UTC]

While I agree that a watermark doesn't completely stop a thief from stealing, at least it slows them down a little. The only things that can save your art protection is image quality, sketches or references outside the internet, and/or time. For the latter, even if someone downloaded and traced over a picture, by the time they reupload it without the watermark, the original source can still be dominant over it.

For most of my pictures, I always sketch them out and then digitize them afterwards so I can have backups in traditional form. I always use watermarks for my original art, but I leave my fan art alone because I feel that since the characters or things are not my own, I cannot really try to be protective over it, unless I was paid to draw them.

I do agree that some watermarks do help. I rather have a watermark up and have the image get stolen, anyways, than to NOT have one. At least a watermark will slow down the theft process. Watermarks in general do not annoy me unless it is completely obstructing the picture to where you can not tell what is going on. I only use lightly transparent watermarks. I respect those who use watermarks and not get mad at them for it.

Karma-and-pencil [2011-11-03 21:43:35 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't really ruin it for me because I ignore it. I'd rather see artist's attempting to protect their work.

For me, it all comes down to what the community is like. For example, you will get people faving
motivational posters which contain stolen pictures with unoriginal quotes. - this promotes art thievery since the thief is being praised rather than called out or reported.
On the other hand, you get people who will willingly go out of their own way to inform an artist that their work has been stolen and encourage reporting this people rather than throwing rage at them.
We need more of these people, it's a good thing to gain friends on here
that will do that for you rather than just post art.

At the end of the day it won't stop talentless idiots from stealing, but it does make a picture less tempting to try and steal, which is the most an artist can achieve when it comes to image protection these days.

It's basically like we are encouraged to prevent people stealing our stuff, rather than to encourage people not to steal in the first place.

To be honest, it doesn't do anything at all to protect the picture (in my opinion), even though it might sound ironic Personally I believe that it's true that all it does is just get in the way of seeing and appreciating the picture, but other than that - people will still steal the picture if they are thieves (a sad, but true fact). A picture can be copied, redrawn, traced, or reproduced in another way - and even if the reproduction is going to be ten times crappier than the original, it will still sadden the artist to see his/her art being stolen and reproduced in a way that looks like pure mockery. It's really the same as with the DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection schemes that many companies employ on CDs and DVDs - you know, like the movies you can't copy to your hard drive, or the games which require you to activate them through the Internet. All of that is supposed to combat piracy, but ironically, it doesn't - there are still pirated movies and pirated games out there, and they appear very quickly no matter how intricate the protection is. All the protection does afterwards is just stand there in the way of real customers who bought the movie/game/etc. legally and who just want to enjoy it and who can't understand why they can't play their game anymore if all of a sudden their Internet connection is lost for a day, or they ran out of activations, or whatever. So yep, watermarks, like any form of DRM out there, are a nuisance for the people who just want to appreciate the picture, and they are no protection at all against art theft. Of course, I respect your opinion and your decision to use them - it's your choice, and not just yours, for a lot of others use it as well, but personally I don't believe that it does at least anything to stop a dishonest person, like an art thief, from stealing the picture.

as i said, yes, there is never the 100% way how to protect own job, but these ways can at least to limit it xD Because alot of these thieves are too lazy to remove it all or very often they are also lazy to do anything with the picture and they are posting 100% the same picture jsut with saying that it's theirs...but in that care the watermark says something else and so protects it..

The bad part is tracing and recolouring, when they easily can to remove the watermark, so thats the rest % of those, that can to steal it... but watermark still can to limit people from stealing at all
Even people will never be able to protect it 100%, i still support every trying to do that

Anyway at least in my case, many people just post my pictures in they FB galleries and other galleries, they do not pretend it as their job..they just like it and they dont have any idea about copyrights (as i did when i got internet first time). There is just a few people that traced and recoloured my pictures, so... i use watermark mainly to get rid of those, that would want to put it in their galleries, and if they do, i will not mind it that much, when there will be the watermark showing the official artist, thets at least the point why i use it..xD

And yeah, trying to protect the expensive programs and games from ilegal downloading is practically the same...and it doesnt work, too.. but still they are at least trying and i support it People dont like watermarks because it annoying and it doesnt work anyway...but nothing in whole the world never can to be 100% protected, so then will people hate the protection of others thing too? I doubt they do, so why to discriminate watermarks when its the same case? xD

and yeah i agree with that it cant to help too much, but i'll never lose anything to try it..anyway i belive that the watermark can at least to limis the cases of stolen work anyway

"even i hate the fact it ruins the pic, too...but i care about the protection more..."

There is no such thing as protecting digital property.

Most stolen art is traced. Watermarks do nothing to protect against that. The only thing watermarks do is disappoint fans and give artists a false sense of security.

There's a lot of turmoil in the software industry right now over this issue, and it's already been well-established that trying to protect your art will only harm your own image, and possibly your sales as well. Artists simply have to accept that there's nothing you can do to stop theft, and they simply need to concentrate on satisfying their audience. It's difficult, but there's no point in making art, and then openly admitting that the watermarks "ruin" the picture. It all depends on why you draw (hopefully, because you enjoy it).

The only time I was really mad over art theft is when someone entered this picture ( [link] ) into an official Sucker Punch contest and won. She got a free video game and other stuff. I contacted the people running the contest, but they did nothing. It's not a big deal if someone copies one of my pictures, because they'll probably get busted eventually, and they will not likely ever become as well-known as I am, anyway. But, when they make money or other kinds of profit from my work, then I get mad. Still, there's really nothing I can do about it. I'm not going to fool myself into thinking that I can.

Also, sometimes it can get petty. Once, an artists watermarked my commission, and I was NOT happy. I did not pay for a watermarked picture, especially since I was not told ahead of time that he would do that. Thankfully, we were able to resolve the issue. People can get so obsessed about protection that they will even anger their paying customers.
