Of all the Generation X characters, I was most excited about and in love with M. She was perfect… that was her power. So cool– especially juxtaposed with all the misfit characters of Gen X .When M came out, I had an Algerian friend who was very similar to the character– beautiful, smart, spoke like 5 languages, and rich. She approved of M’s personality, stating that Algerian girls are indeed like that… prissy, I guess. She did not however understand why they made her black. “There are no black people in Algeria,” according to my friend. But I was like, “Oh what does she know, it’s Africa– I’m sure there’s some black people there.” LOL!
So, I wonder if that’s the reason behind M’s constant skintone fluctuations. Like, did creators just want a rich African girl, arbitrarily pick Algeria, assume she’d have to be black, later realize that the population is 99% arab, and then make her lighter to retroactively say she’s arab now?
Or does she just have vetiligo?
In any case, my M would probably be like original M… when she wasn’t so bitchy and probably be just a biracial black/ arab girl… played by Tatiana Ali in my movie.. hehe!

Super late on this, but we see her father is black and from Monaco, while her mother is from Algeria, so she's bi-racial/mixed, hence her skin tone

Thanks for commenting! I need to delete all my writing on this X-men remiX project as it's super old and most of my opinions have changed or are kinda moot at this point. I am quite proud of her face though-- thanks for noticing that!

Monet was one of the better characters in the Generation X Comics. I always thought her and her twin sisters' skin complexion comes from her Afro-European father. And I know some Arabian who have much darker skin tones. I was really looking forward to seeing Monet and Everett's relationship, until they killed him off. She was a wreck after he died. Tatiana Ali would've been a good choice. I think of Zoe Kravitz playing her now.

I was on team Jubilee when it came to Everett. I thought Ev should have been attracted to Monet, yeah, but M shouldn't have returned it.
Then I wanted him to realize that his gf should be his best bud, Jubilee, and only then have M realize she made a mistake turning him down. I feel like that should have been M's turning point from snobby to slightly more humble.
(Not to mention Ev and M together was just too obvious a choice anyways.)

Are they actually saying she's Arab now or something? I like her best when she's racially ambiguous. Besides, I don't remember them actually confirming a nationality for her. She was kind of hush-hush on where she really came from. Some issues suggested Morocco and others Algeria. But I think you did an absolutely fabulous job on her. There's something very Princess Jasmine-y about her face that really works for her (reminds me of how some artists drew her with a more Arab-influenced nose). And of course, the touches of off-the-rack-ness in her outfit work so well. The belt and boots specifically. Excellent job on my fav Gen-Xer.
(And OMG Tatiana Ali would have been perfect back in the day as M... definitely a more meaty role than Ashley Banks)

Yea I think they are saying she arab. I think they're saying she's a practicing Muslim too. (You know how I feel about religion in comix, so not goin' there.) But yea- she's gone from being as brown as Ev to as light as Angel (during her X-Men stint.) I think they've settled somewhere in between these days.
Thanks on the nose! When I initially drew it, the pencils looked SOO much like Nicole Sherzinger! And not that I dislike her or anything, but I'm glad my inks and colors took her away from that realm- hehe.

A Muslim? Oh please. It's funny how they trample all freakin' over shit that was established in Generation X. Remember the issue where she fights vampires? And she wore a cross throughout the entire issue? I always assumed she was more of a French-type person who was a pick-and-choose Catholic.
(LOL @ Nicole Sherzinger.... I hate her... I loved the Pussycat Dolls when they came out with their first pop album but then all the Pussycat Dolls left the band because they ALL said Nicole was a diva who had everything and they all got dick all having to share dressing rooms and getting no opportunities to sing)

WHAT?! WHY?!?!?!?! That's so contradictory to her character!! Ugh. This is like what they're doing with Emma. Two best characters from the Gen-X days and they're overhauling them.
