The last day, this was it. What was done was done and there was nothing left she could do now, shed walked the course got her minute markers ready, planned every little detail she absolutely could. However she knew, as soon as that adrenaline kicked in, if anything went wrong you were riding by the seat of your pants.

Lots of good lucks, make sure you get home safe from friends and family. Although efforts had been made to make xc safer, you were still jumping solid fences, accidents can happen and it was always extremely nerve wracking. Her trainer once said the nerves where good, so long as they didn’t take over, they’d keep you safe, stop you from taking risks that where too dangerous, the adrenaline would fuel you to hold on.

When they got to the start gate Don was practically cantering on the spot, lots of dancing around Miri circled him to try and keep him calm. “3”, this was the slowest count down ever “2”, this surely isn’t counting in seconds anymore “1”, almost there.. “go, good luck” shouted the steward. They were off, I don’t think she could stop even if she wanted too. Don had bit the bit and they were going for it, this was his best face, his hooves pounding the ground as they flew to the first fence.

It certainly was a challenging course, Miri almost got unseated a few times, Don definitely helped her out with some funky stride counting she’d done. Chipping in a stride or taking one out Don knew how to get them home safely and they did, it was a beautiful clear round to end the event. Within the time and of course big pats and praise to finish it all, she was grateful to be home safe and it was so challenging the adrenaline still pumping. But what she loved most where the quiet moments inbetween fences, no crowds or the few people walking between viewing fences, just listening to the sound of her horse running, breathing in the fresh air, just that time to pause and think galloping with her best friend.

Word count: 359

I did these a bit out of order, this was my first piece, at the time I wasn't sure how it would turn out but I saw the event and loved the idea. So I thought I'd give it a go.

About Willberry the wonder pony, I'd love if Miri and Don where supporters of this charity, the idea of spreading awareness to the charity through HARPG was really inspiring. I don't know if links are allowed but if you search "Willberry the wonder pony" it should come up. The charity aims to support vital research into osteosarcoma and to grant equine related wishes to seriously ill people and their families.
