While awaiting trial for felony theft. Alyssa struggled to adapt to the harsh conditions of county jail. The one solace she found was her cellmate turned girlfriend Chloe who she was fiercely loyal too.

When one of Chloe's rivals in the jail (April - a slightly bigoted mean girl who was deeply jealous of Chloe's power over the guards) started antagonising Chloe in the lunch line. Alyssa intervened in the argument by smacking April in the face with her tray.

Chloe was very impressed by this violent display of loyalty and affection, but unfortunately it did earn Alyssa a week in solitary.

Inmates in solitary are distinguished by the grey sweats they wear (in contrast to the usual jail stripes). They are kept in their cells for 23 hours a day and only permitted to leave for their daily exercise (walking in circles around an closed off inner courtyard) or once every 3 days for a 15 minute shower. Inmates are heavily shackled in a waist chain and leg irons during their exercise time and upon entry and release from the solitary block undergo strict cavity searches.

The final part of Alyssa's induction was posing for her mugshot (pictured here) which would be attached to her record. Obviously her time in solitary was miserable and had adverse effects for her sentencing, parole eligibility and her enrollment in prison programs. But the mandatory behavioural classes she had to attend in the aftermath was how she met the jail's head of psychology and chief Inmate affairs officer, Dr Irina Navika, who would prove to be an important figure in Alyssa's life. In ways that brings what she could imagine now, sniffling in her cold cramped cell.
