But nothing in that calm, though utterly humiliating moment, could ever prepare her for his next words.

Her neck shot back so harshly at that that she feared she had broken a couple of vertebras on its way up. Though she wouldn’t have noticed that with the sheer amount of will she used to keep a blank expression in front of the doctor.

“You’ll have to be more specific than that, doc. What are we talking about exactly?” She sounded nearly bored, though it wasn’t a very strong act. It wouldn’t fool anyone that was paying attention to her and his cerulean eyes, though very much diverted with her reactions, informed her that, yes, he saw right through her.

Francis blew the smoke elegantly, making the disgusting habit quite charming, before casting those disturbing irises down to meet hers.

“And what else would I be talking about?”

He smiled sweetly at her.

“I know your secret.”

His lips were burning with a low fire that promised to consume his whole face anytime soon. His mind and heart were put in absolute turmoil, but at that very moment he didn’t have the time to consider what his position was. And why was that?

General Romulus had decided it was time to preach about the birds and the bees with him.

“You are young and I believe that you are entitled to find out what you actually fancy, but, you see, you shouldn’t do it so openly, it’ll give the others ideas and you know how difficult it can be to control them and…” Apparently the Italian could go on for days without a care in the world. Ludwig didn’t know if he should be impressed or offended by the implications. Not that anyone could know that she was a girl and what was she thinking when she actually kissedhim and- No he wouldn’t allow himself to think about his heart was thundering inside of his ribcage. Not with the witty superior staring at him amiably, but with a hint of a warning inside those golden eyes.

Would it be too obvious if he shot himself to get rid of that conversation?

There was a shy clear of throat that came from the entrance of the barrack that made them both sit straighter in their chair and later on get up, once they saw the state of the young soldier that had just entered the barrack. All his previous thoughts of how he wished he could use the moustache and the olive technic with himself just so he could erase the embarrassment from his mind were whipped away at the second glance he gave towards the private.

The messenger came with an anxiety coating his every action, something that neither of them could quite ignore, not when taking into consideration where they were, at least. They knew that look. It was printed in the faces of every man before their first battle, written over their trembling hands, oozing out every shaken breath they took. Every general knew how to recognize and despise such an emotion, since it created the biggest mistakes ever made in battle.

Fear.

“The North province has been attacked.” He announced while fiddling nervously with the hem of his shirt, his head hanging low, as if it was his fault.

Ludwig and Romulus frown matched as the words sunk in the now cramped and unbearable environment. The General rested his hand over the shoulder of the Italian, the goofy glean always present in the golden of his eyes extinguished, leaving only a mature man and the solemn graveness of an implacable leader behind. That was the man that had leaded them through countless battles and that look was of a man who had seen too much. It was nearly painful to watch. Though he wondered if his own eyes weren’t showing the same expression.

“My men aren’t ready.” Ludwig told him in a grunted whisper, urgent in itself, since there wasn’t any possible way so that the stupid bunch of soldiers he had would survive more than a couple of seconds on a battlefield. Both of them knew that much.

But the look that General Romulus gave him, mournful but decided, informed him that even if that was the truth, it wouldn’t be enough to stop him. Ludwig felt a chill of anticipation go down his spine and tight his stomach into a knot.

“They are either way, my boy.” He said seeming older and older as a tired sigh left him. “War has started.”

The dark haired man prepared himself to leave his barrack, but turned on his heels at the last second for one last command, his voice tired, but nonetheless authoritative and irrevocable.

“Tell the others we’re leaving at dawn.”

Those words, one way or another, would seal their fate.
