Description This is a piece I have been working on, screwing up, cussing at, and giving up on for over a year. I finally had a breakthrough and finished it and the accompanying one while my wife was on vacation. You can check my scraps for the original color study and some in-process pictures. I started off thinking that I was going to do a piece reminiscent of Henry Moore’s figure drawings and ended up looking to Alphonse Mucha and Patrick Nagel for inspiration before I was finished. I think these are going to be a new direction for some of my up and coming nudes. Perhaps I’ll strike a balance between this and my Pseudo-Futurist nudes.

It is about 20"x30" on cold press Illustration board done with water color mostly and colored pencil. I tried to spray paint on this one but I hated the outcome and ended up shaving it with a blade from a mat cutter. I’m not joking! I loved the end result and shaved off some watercolor in a few areas too. It left an interesting texture.

Thank you. I think it is the best painting I've done. I have several more in the works but life on the road has put my studio work on hold.

Some day I'll get back home and get to work on them again.

Time of painting were not spend for nothing there. - We have uncommon balance between tasty flesh and rebel move to painterly Utopy. May be inner conflict of this two will armed you up to grab the core of new dramaturgy of Noble-Dame-Painting.
In any case, my congratulations with a juicy piece of prey, Andrew !

That texture looks just like something I'm working on...and, like you, I'm having a hard time making it work. But I think the problem is more with my struggle to control it than the texture itself. I usually just put down my brushes and walk away for a couple days or months. I usually come up with something, eventually... What really gripes me is when I come back a month later and it still kicks my ass. But in spite of your struggles, this piece does seem to be working.

I do believe you've got something going here, and you should pursue it. Be careful about the Nagel influence, though...even though I like his work as an illustrator, his slickness was what made him popular in Playboy. You obviously have a love of texture, and I'm not sure that Nagel is a good fit, in that regard. I'm certainly interested in seeing what you will do with Futurism in your nudes. That has always been one of my favorite movements, and have used it a lot in the past with nudes, especially with sexual fetishism. However, I'm finding that, in my own work, the aggressive, free-form presence of texture and the cool structure of futurism (and cubism, it's father) are not exactly a match made in heaven. Which is exactly why it must be attempted. I'll be watching...

Thanks for the encouragement. I think this was a breakthrough piece. I have several similar ones in progress that haven't been worked on since I started trucking.

I have loved Nagel's work since I was in high school. I suppose I live the stylization and geometric linear treatment of his figures. That is something that I am interested in imitating. But I'm not about to give up my vivid pallet for gallons of grey and muted tones. I'm actually interested in layering more and more textures into the background and the figure in my in-progress works.

The Futurism renderings and free-form textures can work together beautifully. Just check out the paintings of Tom Thewes He is one of my favorite living artist.

BTW Futurism is older than Cubism. The movement just took a radical change after several of the Italian painters adopted the language of Cubism after seeing some canvases at an exhibition in Paris. It was "Fathered" more by an Italian painting movement called Divisionism whose chief practitioner was Gaetano Previati.

Yikes, do I sound like an art history dork or what?!

Thanks again for the kind words.

Octonomoes In reply to archambers [2011-03-29 21:42:55 +0000 UTC]

I wondered why I didn't recall much about Divisionism in 3 years of Art History (except that Seurat called his own work that), so I did some reading...It seems Divisionism in its original form was not a viable philosophy because its conservative technique did not jibe with its radical politics. It died on the vine in just a few years, also because Italy's repressive regime at the time made the artists' lives rather difficult. While it is true that Divisionism in it's true form was alive before Cubism, it also effectively died before Cubism. It was Boccioni, among others, who used Cubism to revive Divisionism, but in the process reshaped it into a completely different animal, both technically and philosophically. While I can accept that Cubism was not in the lineage of Divisionism, I would still hold that it was it's Stepfather....wow...I haven't written that much about Art History in 20 years...I'm exhausted.
Oh, and I am familiar with Mr. Thewes work...we actually faved each other some time ago...I agree, he is brilliant! I'm glad you reminded me of him. I revisited his page, with much pleasure.

Sorry I didn't reply to use question - my shots of HENRY MOORE's sculptures where in around his home Perry Green.
Your painting kindsof reminds me of De Kooning's expression; the woman figure, hugely inflated with a spirit of abstraction mad-painting in full surrounding.

It's compelling though I'm not entirely certain how I feel about it. The vivid color and the dimensions are intense, yet the expression seems off, and terribly out of place.....

But.... It's unique. It gets a response. Well done.
