Description In the midst of the carnage which was the American Civil War, a woman named Charity Wilson held the power of the Wotch. She had kept her distance from the war and the world in general, her powers a carefully hidden secret, until one day she found her dearest friend, Union soldier Victor Durant, mortally wounded on a battlefield. Charity tried frantically to restore Victor, but the healing spells she knew had no effect; his injuries were severe and death was literally seconds away. Desperate to save him, she did the only thing she could think of: she grabbed Victor's fife and, following the ancient tradition, imbued it with the power of the Wotch and pressed it into his hand, forsaking her claim to the power and passing it to her successor.

Of course only a woman can be the Wotch, so when the fallen soldier regained consciousness a few moments later, she discovered that not only was she still alive, but she had become female. In a sense, the man named Victor really had died, and a woman named Victoria had taken his place. Needless to say, a very difficult time lay ahead for both Charity and Victoria......

Brothers in Arms, Sisters in Magic

Backstory for these characters very graciously provided by Anne Onymous herself. Too cool.

Maybe the Wotch is the Immortal key to the Lock Sourd (V-Man's Sourd of Power)

I'll have to talk to Anne about that; I'd certainly like to do some kind of guest comic one of these days.

Man, do all the Wotches have such cool origin stories?

Maybe not all of them, but the ones I know of have been pretty cool.

Again, a very nice composition, R-Type. The central pose between Victoria and Charity is great, the shadow over the former's eyes conveying a feeling of confusion, anger, and acceptance all at once. The part of this piece that I like the least is the isolated scene portrayed in the background photo (a view of the aftermath of Antietam, I believe.) The finer details, like the figures' and hat's angle against the ground, and the pool of blood completely covering the surrounding grass don't seem to fit. Other than that, I enjoyed this piece.

When she woke up, she must have thought "What kind of a bullet was that!?"

I love the way this has all been set out, and that was a pretty interesting background story too. ^_^ I'm hoping Victoria did forgive Charity for turning him into a her, but I'm sure s/he would have.

The adjustment period right afterward was pretty harsh, since Victoria had to deal with several things at once: 1) she almost died, 2) she'd become female, 3) she was now a very powerful magical being, because 4) Charity was a powerful magical being.

They must have worked it out eventually because Charity had to teach Victoria about the power, but I expect it was a rough time for a while.
