Description "Ladies and gentlemen," Director Fowler stacked the papers with a decisive thunk and stood, "It's time to face facts: Just like humans, Cybertronians periodically go to war. Well, it has happened again, and this time Earth is the prize."

Generals Bryce and Abernathy looked borderline apoplectic, and the Joes were all scowling.

"How soon before we start getting invasions?" Duke asked solemnly.

"You misunderstand," a grizzled stranger in an unfamiliar military uniform spoke for the first time from Fowler's right. "They don't want your world or your resources. The goal is humanity itself."

Fowler nodded. "Think about it: despite being comparatively short-lived and fragile, humans are fierce, compassionate, loyal, resourceful, and very adept at killing threats. Ideal allies, and I'm using their explanation. But obviously we can't support every faction on Cybertron."

Abernathy sighed. "So we're looking at the mother of all courtship rivalries, in a manner of speaking."

"Precisely so, General," a second stranger at Fowler's left growled. "If you will accept advice, I recommend that Earth turn its eyes towards the Free Peoples. They are more likely to treat you as equals."

"The who now?" Tunnel Rat whispered to Heavy Duty, who shrugged.

"Mr. Ouros refers to a loose confederation of Autobots, Predacons, Dinobots, and former Decepticons that are opposed to the main government's increasingly restrictive policies towards minority frametypes." The first stranger answered, having heard Tunnel Rat despite his whispering.

"Yes, thank you, Commander," Fowler hastily cut in, seeing the dark looks passing between Magnus and Ouros. "The factions will be discussed in further detail when we brief the Pentagon, as I'm sure everyone here will agree is necessary."

"One brief question, more of a caveat," Bryce spoke up, "Your man Darby is supposed to be the Predacon expert, right? And Agent Nakadai is usually the advocate for Cybertron when there are concerns. I have to wonder why they're not present at this meeting."

Magnus's holomatter avatar straightened his shoulders and dipped his head a fraction, acknowledging the general. "They would have been present if not for an urgent matter on Cybertron that required their attention. I have every confidence that Wrecker Nakadai will deal with the issue and return to Earth in a timely manner."

"Well that depends on what route you sent them on, Commander," Ouros muttered, a touch snidely.

"The tunnels beneath Nova Cronum are the most efficient route to infiltrate Iacon undetected. You would know, having used that route yourself during the War," Magnus snapped back.

The Joes and generals looked from one to the other, bewildered, and Fowler simply mouthed 'don't ask'.

The holomatter did a decent job of projecting outrage as Ouros suddenly stood. "You sent my son under Nova Cronum?! There are swarms of Insecticons down there!"

Coattails flapping dramatically, the avatar made for the door. "So help me, Magnus, if I end up having to piece Vanguard's armor back together again because you chose that road without a thermal scan, you'll hear about it!"

Magnus had started visibly at the word "insecticons". He stood as well, and briefly saluted the gathering. "Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen. It would seem that I have some Headmasters to retrieve. I'd just as soon not have to explain to Ratchet why Doctor Esquivel's person or transtector is damaged, so unless anyone has any objections?"

Most of the group had met Ratchet before. No one objected to the end of the meeting.

As the Joes gathered their gear, Duke leaned over to Scarlett. "Did the alien guys seem a little..."

"Territorial? Yeah," Scarlett scoffed. "And someone tell me I didn't imagine the big guy referring to Captain Darby as his son."

"Wait, for real?" Tunnel Rat interrupted, "What, is the kid half alien? That...would actually explain some things."

Fowler dropped his face into his palm and resolved to put in a call to Optimus and June later to straighten things out.

Fowler is busted. Along with Magnus. Any chance I can get a glimpse into what their comeuppance will be?

"How do you take down an insecticon again Vanguard?" Raphael asked half jokingly as the glowing optics circled them.Β
"I threw a scraplet at it," Vanguard reminded him grimly.
"Yeah," Miko muttered as she hefted her mace, "don't think that will work now what with the transactors and all."Β
"Well then," Vanguard grinned. "We get creative."Β

"I don't...know what...those dragons teach you out here," Raf grunted, swinging his eco-bow like a club, "But it's working! Keep it up!"

Jack ducked a particularly large male's wild swing and slammed the edge of his shield into the armor gap under the Insecticon's arm.

"Didn't learn this from the Predacons," he grunted, and nearly lost his balance. "This is old Kaon. Gladiator pits."

The Insecticon overbalanced in reaching for the Headmasters, and Jack darted up his arm and fired rapidly at the base of the mech's helm.

"What the scrap, dude?" Miko slammed her mace into a smaller male's midsection. "He put you in the arena?"

"Wha-? No! He doesn't know I know this stuff, please don't tell him," Jack yelped.

The three Headmasters backed up, standing shoulder to shoulder as the swarm moved in closer.

"Whatever," Miko growled, charging the mace for a plasma burst. "As long as it keeps us alive."

"As you can see," Storm Soldier held up the glowing ingot for Vanguard's inspection. The young mech leaned in and stared intently at the object. "The forge has indeed heated the ore to the required heat..."
"But it is still too brittle," Vanguard finished the thought with a nod. "It won't do for Skybar's blade..."
"But..." Storm Soldier pressed when Vanguard hesitated.
"It would do well for the shear pins on Grindclan's energon wheels," Vanguard offered. "They are looking for a cheap metal that will work as a safety."
Storm Soldier nodded thoughtfully and set the ingot to the side. "Indeed," he rumbled as he picked up the cooling blade he had been working on and examined it. "It is a critical lesson in life that what serves one purpose well, even exceedingly well, might easily fail at another."
Vanguard looked at him expectantly as if expecting more and Storm Soldier was hard pressed to suppress a smirk despite his irritation.Β
"For example?" Vanguard finally pressed with the eagerness and impatience of youth.Β
Storm Soldier schooled his face into utter blandness and gazed down at his pupil. "This ore would make a fine shear pin but a poor sword," Storm Soldier pointed out innocently, before turning back to a fire. "Or a Wrecker who might stand the fires of torment and torture unbroken but is incapable of keeping a secret among allies."
His dorsal Β plating to Vanguard Storm Soldier allowed himself the indulgence of a widening smirk as he heard every joint in the Vanguard armor stiffen, even over the sound of the forge. The seconds dragged out into unbearable minutes and he could almost hear the organic gears turning in the human's head.
"If your interest in metallurgy has waned," Storm Soldier rounded on Vanguard after he had schooled his faceplates, if not his burning red optics, into an appropriately neutral vissage, "then perhaps we could discuss combat maneuvers?"Β

ha! Oh Vanguard, expect little free time after that escapade! That's brilliant!

He'd faced Decepticons, Predacons, Airachnid and death in countless guises. He'd even faced the potential destruction of his homeworld without showing his fear. But for all that, Vanguard found himself unable to stem the flow of stammering explanations that poured out of his mouth.

"I-I'm sorry, I didn't think you'd- I didn't want to bring up- I-" His voice trailed off as he realized how ridiculous it was for a grown man in robotic armor to be making excuses like a child. It was all he could do not to hang his head and scuff his feet!

"Show me."

Storm Soldier's posture was not overtly indicative of anger or displeasure, but Vanguard still suspected he was cross at him for hiding this.

"Now?" Vanguard squeaked, silently committing to memory an extensive list of ways Miko would pay for this.

"Now."

Storm Soldier set down his tools and took his broad shield from the wall above the finished weapons. He strode out into the waning sunlight and turned back to eye the Headmaster. With a rather imperious gesture, he beckoned the smaller warrior out to join him.

"Show me," he repeated.

Within the transtector, Jack took a deep breath to steady his shaking nerves -- these things somehow always grew exponentially harder while someone was watching! Then he slid into a ready stance, shield up and one knee slightly bent, watching to see what the other mech would do.

"Your shield is too high." Storm Soldier stepped forward as if to correct his stance, but Vanguard caught a slight ripple of the cords beneath his left pauldron and vaulted back out of his reach.
The old warlord paused, then chuckled dryly. "Good."

He raised his own shield and advanced. "Continue."

Vanguard couldn't help feeling that Storm Soldier hoped that by the time this little ordeal was over, he'd be tired enough to confess. The truth was that he'd gone through Arcee's old mission files to find footage of Megatron fighting, watching closely to see if he could learn anything from it.
He still wasn't sure how Storm Soldier would take that, given that their not-so-ancient history was a taboo topic between them.

But Storm Soldier had done enough -- more than enough! -- for him already, and he hadn't felt right about pestering him to teach him more diverse combat maneuvers. Some little part of him, even all these years later, still worried that if he bothered the warrior too much, Storm Soldier would tire of him and send him back to Earth, blood-ransom or not.

Vanguard caught a blow on his shield -- Storm Soldier was holding back and it still nearly knocked him helm over pedes -- and brought up his other arm to counter a second attack. He was beginning to wish he'd just asked after all.

At least that episode had a higher quality of fight scene than pretty much any of the other episodes in the show. Not quite a good tradeoff for dealing with robot body-horror, but a decent consolation XD

Oh boy...Magnus really dropped them in it this time. I can only wonder how dear old Megs and June will react to whatever state Vanguard is in when he returns...

Could probably do with a bowl of popcorn for when they both start tearing into Magnus XD

ArdentAspen In reply to Urchie1991 [2016-05-16 23:57:24 +0000 UTC]

Add to that whatever guilt he'll be feeling if Miko gets hurt (though he's pretty sure Miko can kill anything that tries to hurt her)

June will probably respond with a stern but understanding "I know time was of the essence, but that could have ended very badly. Honestly, Magnus, I would've expected this from Wheeljack more than you."

Optimus just barely talks Megatron out of demanding a duel to settle accounts if Jack is actually injured under the armor. It was a close call though and almost everyone knows it.
