These are some really cool illustrations of Maxwell, particularly his expressions. Seeing how you draw Charlie as well, I think it the two interpretations look really nice for these two.

I know what you mean by inconsistency. I've always strived for realism, not with any success yet, but I always tried. When I came to Don't Starve and started drawing for it, I swapped over to a more stylized look, seeking to practice something new here. I'm very inconsistent because of it, it feels like. I don't have very much practice with style at all, always trying to break it down in favor of realism.
However, your Maxwells actually seem consistent to me, he looks about the same compared to the others. Has the same interesting expressions and eyes, or so it would seem to me.

I didn't really have a style goal before I got into Don't Starve. I have a feeling I'm starting to develop something more now. Realism has never been a goal of mine, it just doesn't interest me as much as a bright fun cartoony style does.
I'm still yet to upload some more recent Maxwells i did, I should do that soon >v> I love him a whole heap.

And to all their own of course - I think what we aim for with our art depends on why we make it.
The reason I favored realism all these years was because I was typically drawing species/races/characters/places/settings in my own worlds and lores. I wanted people to see them the way I did... Realistically.
Of course, drawing Don't Starve fan-art would be different because, in my head, the don't starve people aren't photo-realistic. I have fun toying with portraits and attempting such, though. But it's not really how I see them in my head.

Oh yes, that's the cool thing about realistic styles, you can actually form a person/animal/object that could actually exist.
Yeah, seeing the Don't Starve characters as realistic people is a bit uncanny.

Depends on how you make them realistic, but with their GIANT HEADS, perhaps so.
I'm sure the heads are so large so we can see the faces better, and therein better identify each character from another. I like to draw them with more proportionate heads, as it seems we both do.
