Chapter 1: New Kid on the Mountain

Isolated excavation sites outside crumbling European villages aren't a common summer break destination, but not everyone has tenured professors of archeology and anthropology for parents. Dr. and Dr. McCullom's talent for finding long-lost artifacts, cultures, and peoples was unmatched only by their over-excitable, caffeine-addicted son, Jude.

When his parents' colleague from the university decided he wished to take on an assistant during his solo research trip, Jude practically flew to the man's office. Within minutes, he and Professor Steele began making plans to backpack their way to dozens of historically significant sites across the Nordic countries.

Now, months later, Jude was about to tear his hair out. After a Viking-era sword had been discovered in a lake made international headlines, Prof. Steele had originally created the trip with the purpose of meeting with other historians in the area to try and locate similar remnants that could offer clues about the people who once made up the most feared society on earth.

Yes there had been findings of historical significance and yes it was great to survive on something other than uncooked ramen and coffee, but that didn't make the lulls in action any less painfully boring. Despite all the recent successes in Sweden, Steele had insisted on taking their two-person expedition to the southernmost coast of Finland. Where absolutely nothing was happening.

"This whole field of study wouldn't exist if it weren't for patience," Prof. Steele had told him "Just you wait, I'm sure I'll be able to find something here that will absolutely blow your socks off."
