Description So here you go: My first photography to be uploaded, taken with my new camera, a Nikon D40!

Please do give me all the critique you can; I'm eager to leran as much as possible, on how to improve!

And I definitely need something to edit with. All I can do at the moment, is use the editing program that came with the camera!

And for the interested, this was taken at IVAR (in English, meaning Intercommunal Water, Sewage and Renovation, and Ivar being a Norwegian name), the water-cleaning facility of Rogaland, the Norwegian county I live in.

Now drown me in advice.

Edit:
Featured by the great `gilad ? Wow. The world really is about to end.

As I told you, I like blue. And I like tunnels, they are always mystical O,..,o Well, usually ppl see the light in the end of a tunnel, and here we see a darkness. Nice.

What do you think it means here? I mean, thinking like that.

Light endings seems to mean death. Does that mean you'll live? Usually, that'd just mean you're walking straight into the lair of the scary-thingy in a horror movie.

RightTheFighter In reply to Ariades [2007-12-13 13:47:27 +0000 UTC]

That means all your long way is in vain %)
The dead end isn't that dead though. So you just have to turn around and go back to your life. ( I hate coming back)

This is actually next to the sea.

But if you want a house near mountains, cliffs, ocean, etc... Norway should be the place for you.

This is a great picture - the arches give it the look of ripples in water, which goes nicely with the predominantly blue coloring.

Well, well, well...
This one is a great one

Good points:
The constant tone, almost all the image is covered with a blue atmosphere, so color isn't distracting here. Remember to avoid color crowded frames if you are not looking this.
Using fading lines and concentric rings to lead the eye to the photo (that's your greatest achievement here, you are leading my eye to the edge, and thats the key in composition, keep it in mind)
Separating the focal point from the rest of the background. You isolated the background using the glass. Lucky you!
You also had the luck to get some sun rays focusing on the closest area to the black hole.

The rest:
Now it's time to think about depth of field. I don't know if it apply to this case, but anyway, try to set aperture to 2.8 and use higher values on focal length. That will allow you to blur parts of the image and will help the focus to stand out.
Be careful with shinny material, like the container in the background. White becomes overexposed there.
Find out a program to work out curves and levels. And try to find some sharpener to get extra detail in your photos.

That's it. Hope you find interesting at least

Ariades In reply to animumbra [2007-09-17 19:18:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks alot. Glad to see you like it.

I'll just skip the praise, and go to the advices.

Aperture... that should be the A setting on my camera, or..? I've been working to understand the manual settings of the camera, instead of simply using the Auto.

So this far, I've only learned the S, which I assume stands for shutter-time. Exposure. Uhm. Okay, I don't really know! But I'm learning how to use it

Yeah, that white spot annoyed me, too. The whole outside of the facility is just... blinding white.

Curves and levels... Right, I'll remember that. I've been hearing about curves and levels. I have so much to learn

Yes, thanks. 'Twas very interesting. I want to learn as much as I can.

Perhaps you've some advice for the other photography I submitted, too?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

animumbra In reply to Ariades [2007-09-17 20:05:37 +0000 UTC]

Better than this, I'll recommend you to use RAW format.
I was thinking about any software for you... and your camera actually haves one
Nikon has a RAW processing program, it must be included in your camera box, so install it, shoot in raw, and enjoy post-processing

And about exposure, aperture...
A--> aperture priority, you set aperture, machine decides shutter speed.
S-->you set shutter speed, machine...
M--> you decide both.

Go get some tutorials in DA. It will be a great starting point:

Ariades In reply to animumbra [2007-09-17 20:10:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I was told RAW would be much better working with! But I was also told I'd most likely rather get a PhotoShop plugin, in order to handle it <.<

So there should be some software to process the RAW images in the CD's I got with my camera? I'll get right on looking for it!

Thank you for the info. That'll come in handy.

A = Okay, I can understand that. Well, except for... what is aperture?
S = Hm, okay. Then I had that right.
M = Ah, I see. That'll come in handy, too. I'll just keep on practising!

But what about the P?

I' look at those tutorials right away.

Thank you for all this help I'll be going down to the library tomorrow, too. Should try finding some books on photography.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

animumbra In reply to Ariades [2007-09-17 20:14:11 +0000 UTC]

A is aperture. Talking about diaphragm of the lens.
P is programmed mode. Set your preferences and save in programmed mode, then you can go back there with P.

And one last thing. Forget JPG, ok?

I like blue and architectural shots - and this is two-in-one
how does it works with D40? I still think about purchasing it but I am not sure..

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ariades In reply to shawir [2007-09-17 12:47:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, this one really does fit blue, doesn't it? I hope I can go there again, some day.

Personally, I think the D40 is excellent. I've only had for a week, though. But this far, I'm starting to learn some of the manual settings, and such, and... I really think it's an excellent camera. I bought it for the reason that it's a relatively cheap camera, when compared to the quality of it.

I'd say either a Nikon D40, or a Canon EOS 400D (I haven't tried one, but I hear that one's just about the same as the D40).

Good luck!

That's really cool. the only thing that would be nice is thatthe glass warps the view of the outside buildings, but there probably isnt too much you can do about that. Other than that, the colors look really cool. The sharp contrast between the dark blue interior with the lighter colors outside give this an instant

BlackHawkRising In reply to BlackHawkRising [2007-09-19 05:49:19 +0000 UTC]

Ya, me neither (editing). Photoshop is suposedly helpful, but I havn't gotten around to learning it yet. It still looks really cool

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Ariades In reply to BlackHawkRising [2007-09-16 17:46:50 +0000 UTC]

Hm, yeah, I know what you mean I've another shot, but it was taken further down the tube, so that it doesn't look that long anymore. Which kind of ruins the effect I like in it, from the start.

Some editing might help it, but unfortunately, I know heck about editing!

I like the colours, too This is probably the part I like the most, about the entire facility! Maybe besides from the stairwell, but I didn't have the opportunity to take a picture there.

Thank you very much for the fav! It's amazing, how much attention this photography has acquired. I never saw such a kickstart coming for my carreer as photographer.

I absolutely love this picture. The tunnel forces my mind to start fantasizing about taking trips into unknown worlds, seeing strange, new, exciting things beyond the walls of glass. It's very thought-provoking.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ariades In reply to Emerune [2007-09-16 22:04:56 +0000 UTC]

What is beyond the walls of glass, is a sewage-cleaning facility Behind me, is the machinery for producing biopellets from the remains of mostly humans. In front of me, is the entrance to the facility where, literally, the shit of people is being cleaned, and so on, for then to be poured into the ocean, as clean water.

What a beautiful world we live in!

Sorry. I just had to say it.

Thank you very much for liking.

Ariades In reply to Emerune [2007-09-25 15:22:42 +0000 UTC]

Heheh. Thought it might be

It turned out pretty well, yeah. That's probably the best-looking part of the entire facility.

It was also funny when the lights went out, when we were in the middle of the mountain. The facility is built inside the mountain, you see.

And the info-speech about it... Brr. I almost fell asleep. As did many others

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Emerune In reply to Ariades [2007-09-27 04:44:52 +0000 UTC]

The lights went out on you? Oh my. I bet that was interesting.

Out of curiosity, why were you at the facility to begin with? Were you on some kind of field trip or something else of that sort?

Ah, yes. The information they give you on any tour is always bound to be incredibly dull. I can hardly stand it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ariades In reply to Emerune [2007-09-28 19:37:01 +0000 UTC]

Very, very interesting. Although most people started screaming, and I joined in, yelling "WE'RE GONNA DIE, WE'RE GONNA DIE, WE'RE GONNA DIE!"

Pretty nice, really.

'Twas a school excursion. I've been there three times now. Smells just as foul, just about every time.

I'm glad you agree. Then you know how I had it.

Darn trips for school. Unless you're incredibly lucky, you never get to go anywhere that's actually good for your mind. It's all rather pointless.

Ariades In reply to Emerune [2007-10-03 13:04:45 +0000 UTC]

Some people even thought it a terrorist attack. Geh heh. Pure hysteria.

This was a very intersting one. At least the facility. Not the information we were fed = D
Went to the theater with school yesterday. The play was too long, but very good.

Emerune In reply to Ariades [2007-10-04 22:34:42 +0000 UTC]

Really? Sheesh. Some people overreact way too much. Not every event that happens has the purpose of curtailing one's life, after all.

Well, that's good. At least there was something about it that interested you.

Ah, now that's neat. I never did go to the theater at my school. We had a small one not too far away from us, but you had to go there on your own time on one of the few days it was open.
