Description    During WW1 like many nationalists Czechs and Slovaks saw a opportunity to turn Their home(at the time part of the austro Hungarian empire) into an independent country. It was October 1914 when the militia joined the Russians on the eastern front, and were established as the Czechoslovak Legion in 1917.(There were were also Czechs in the western front, like the Nazdar Company, but that's a story for another day). When the Bolsheviks took power in 1917 and made peace with the central powers the legion found itself trapped in hostile territory. Under the Penza Agreement, the legion would lay down its arms for save passage to the port city of Vladivostok. The bolsheviks however felt the legion would join the counter revolutionary forces. The Czechs refused to disarm and demanded their transportation to Vladivostok.
On top of this in 1918, before the Czech troops could leave through Ukraine the German Army launched operation Faustschlag on the eastern front to force the soviet government to agree to their peace terms. A  clash happened with the Germans at Bakhmach, when the legion prevailed they negotiated a truce to allow their armored trains to pass through freely to Chelyabinsk. As the Czechs continued their voyage the Bolsheviks attacked them 1,700km east of Chelyabinsk, these fights led to the legion capturing cities all along the Siberian railway, and by summer almost controlled it entirely and even captured a large gold reserve at Kazan(which they took with them)

The Armored Trains varied, mostly captured Russian ones with additional improvised weapons and protection. Communication between the trains was through telegraph stations along the railway. As Russia further plunged into civil war the legion allied with the White Russian forces. When the Bolsheviks learned of the Legion's progress  Tsar Nicholas 2 and the rest of the royal family were executed. The fighting continued, with the allies landing a force of 90,000 troops to capture Vladivostok and buy the Czech time to reach the city and finally evacuate.

They reached the port in August ending the insane 9,000 mile journey and began the voyage to France. The big slap in the face came when the folks back home declared independence and formed the Republic of Czechoslovakia. The new government immediately ordered the Czech legion to REMAIN in Siberia during the russian civil war. By 1920 the communists had pretty much won, with the legion unable to return home for over 3 years. This time trapped at Vladivostok they were given a deal.
In exchange for their weapons and the Tsar's gold reserve( remember from earlier?) They would be allowed a safe passage home.

Fun and games concerning gold and an armored train.
