Season 1 - Episode 5

As the night falls, Xena and Gabrielle discuss the murder clues on their room at the Inn.

Leaving their difficult journey behind (episode 4) Xena and Gabrielle arrive at the town of Monkaxe, with a message for the town councillor, sent from Whiterun. But as soon as they talk to some people, they realize something bad has happened. It seems the councillor has died the night before their arrival, and it was murder! Being short-handed and suspecting sorcery is involved, the captain of the guard asks Gabrielle and Xena to help with the investigation.

After questioning the witnesses and searching the crime scene for clues, some interesting findings turn up. The councillor's wife was having an affair, and the man involved with her hasn't been seen since the night of the murder... Some witnesses saw a figure wearing a hood, running away from the crime scene at the time of the murder. A helper of the town's healer says she examined the body, but there was nothing that could be done, so the undertaker buried it... Seems odd they were in such a hurry, both of them.

While debating their findings Xena and Gabrielle are suddenly startled by knocking on the door. But when Gabrielle opens it there is no one outside, only a note, that reads "corpse". They eventually decide to visit the graveyard, and when they dig out the coffin, the corpse is missing... a sack of dirt is in its place...
