Description

Her background story:

Abducted from her family and tribe at a very young age and forced to slavery by the corporate West, the young Maori girl soon fled, and was picked up by a group of pirates in search of a new youngster to boss around the ship.

With no possible way of returning to her home, she stayed with the pirates, slowly working her way up the hierarchy in the hope that one day she would have the opportunity to take her revenge on the greedy West and return to her family.

Thanks! Some kind of minor explosionβ€”maybe from a gun backfiring during a raid.

HeyΒ Nathascha, found this image a while back as I was looking for inspirational footage for new characters for my Dungeons and Dragons campaign as I am a DM running a completely self designed world.
Amazing artwork, I think she might just make one of the most interesting characters yet. Did a wide background in which she isnt a pirate perse but love her energy. She might be the most dangerous and in the same time most helpfull character they might ever encounter.Β Cant wait to reveal her to my players

Thank you for the amazing inspiration!
ps dang it took some googling to find out who made it though ^^

Hi Ruud, sorry for the very late answer. I don't check Deviantart often enough these days. But thank you very much for your comment and for taking the time to seek me out! I'm curious to know where you originally stumbled upon my image?

Thanks again and I hope you had a fun time!

Hi! I've composed an orchestral piece and was wondering if I could use this amazing piece of art for the cover page of the score. If not, that's fine too, but I thought it best to get permission first haha.Β

Hmmm.... She looks like she was kidnapped and forced to work a pirate ship or something... working her way up the ladder, has been through a couple of battles. The eyes are too captivating... and she looks too realistic. OK Those are my criticisms! Wow... you did a fantastic job - would love to see a full body of her (as someone said below). You have mad talent!

Hehe. Thanks a lot! You're too kind! I'm actually working on a new piratey piece at the moment that will be more than just a bust/portrait β€” with different characters, though. Hopefully you'll find that interesting too.

chaos-walking59 [2014-12-18 09:42:09 +0000 UTC]

This looks awesome Tho I would like to confirm that there is no real history with Maori's being pirates. The Maroi lived peacefully in New Zealand for a few centuries before the English arrived. Maroi did come from Polynesian countries in canoes. When the English arrived, the two groups managed to come to an agreement and signed the Treaty ofΒ Waitangi in 1840 but then the English broke the agreement and then things happened and it's a very long and boring history that involves a lot of politics that we had to learn at school.
But aside from that, this work looks fantastic and also thats the great thing about art, you can do whatever you want with it.

Hehe. I'm sorry you had to dig into your school memoirs, but thanks for clearing that up. It's great to know the real historyβ€”even if you're going to bend the facts a little. So I appreciate that!Β
And thanks very much for your kind words too!

You're welcome!

She is definitely an eyecatcher and a subject that makes me curious. Is there a real Maori Pirate tradition or did you combine the subjects due to the interesting mix?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtByNath In reply to BarefootPiratequeen [2014-12-05 14:08:43 +0000 UTC]

That's great to hear! Actually I don't know. I researched it, but couldn't seem to find anything that implies that there's a tradition of piracy amongst the Maori people. If you find out, I'd love to know!
And to be honest I just have a great interest in both subjects so I thought a combination of the two would be very interesting, yes.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BarefootPiratequeen In reply to ArtByNath [2014-12-05 14:31:04 +0000 UTC]

I could not find any proof of a Maori piracy tradition, either. Although they seem at least to have a seafarer tradition, coming from other Polynesian islands to New Zealand by boat. I also read that that some of them hired on ships after the Europeans discovered NZ. So at least it is possible that some Maori warrioress or princess might have become a pirate for any reason. Β
By the way, both are very cool subjects to be combined. What made you interested in them?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtByNath In reply to BarefootPiratequeen [2014-12-10 09:54:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's about as much as I could dig up as well.

Well, piracy is an interesting subject in itself. Maori culture I became interested in due to a great interest in New Zealand (due to the Lord of the Rings ). And also, I've always had a love for indigenous peoples and tribes. There's something about them living in harmony with their surroundings, their rituals, religions and spiritualism, and the creative way they express themselves with fashion and body mods that appeal to me.

How about you? What got you interested in pirates?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BarefootPiratequeen In reply to ArtByNath [2014-12-10 10:24:16 +0000 UTC]

Well, my older brother had a lot of pirate books and comics when we grew up. I loved to read them all, too. I guess I have always been a kind of tomboy then. I was curious to read about all the adventures and fightings. Later I also read about the pirates' society which usually was by far more social than the tyranny of kings, aristocrats and the church at that time. And I was really excited when I first heard of female pirates like Anne Bonny and Mary Read. I think all this has deeply impressed me, leaving a mark for all times. And indeed, I am still a rebel soul...
