As a GM for the Traveller TTRPG I have to say THANK YOU! for the huge injection of inspiration as I am detailing out colony worlds and trying to make them more intertesting (or as my Mom used to say, Give them some Curb Appeal! You do delightful work in Vie!

My only problem here is that those 'tubes' on the planet are about 20 miles wide...which just doesn't make sense.

If a person from the 1st century would see New York from the 21st century he would probably say something similar...
This person would probably say that it doesn't make sense to put together so many millions of people in one place if you have so much space in other areas of the land where you can build. He would probably say that such massive road and train systems wouldn't make sense. He would say that a flying airplane wouldn't make sense and he wouldn't even understand the concept of internet.
Sufficiently advanced technology is incomprehensible. Or, as Arthur C. Clarke once put it: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.".
I think this other quote from him can also be applied to what you wrote: "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong."
