Try making the slats from steel/aluminium, then you could lacquer/anodize it to a color you want.
Rivet those pieces onto, maybe, pin-striped (or some other patterned) leather.
Then for the majority, probably a hexagon-pattern or something.
Fake carbon-fibre made from nylon is pretty cheap, that could also add a futuristic touch.
I really like the armor you make, wish I knew more about leather so I could make my own lol
