Description "All I wanted was to tell you to go to an antique shop in the Bronton road and sneer at a cow creamer."
"Sorry, do what... to a what?"
"They've got an eighteenth century cow creamer there that Tom's going to buy this afternoon."
"Oh! It's a silver whatnot is it? For his collection?"
"Precisely. Sort of cream jug, looking like a cow, about six inches long. Go there, ask them to show it to you, and when they do, register scorn."
"Wh- The idea being what?"
"To sap their confidence of course, chump! To sow doubts and misgivings in their mind, make 'em tip the price a bit. Cheaper he gets the thing the better he'll be pleased! And I want him in a cheery mood. Because if I succeed in firing the grindle up for this serial, I shall be compelled to get into his ribs for a biggish sum of money. So! Pop off there without delay, shake your head at the thing."
"Oh I can't oscillate the bean, not today!"
"Oh, so that's how it is, is it? Well if your lothesome excesses have left you incapable of head-shaking, you can at least curl your lip?"
"Oh rather!"
"Then carry on! Draw your breath in sharply. Oh uh, also, try clicking the tongue. Oh yes um, tell them you think it's modern Dutch."
"Why?"
"Well I don't know, apparently it's something a cow creamer ought not to be."
"Oh. Right-ho then, I will do this task for you Aunt Dalia. 'Scratch Bertram Wooster' I often say, 'and you find a boyscout.'"
"A drunken reveler you mean."

Hero number five of Hero Month (ne Villain Month) is Bertie Wooster, from the books of P. G. Wodehouse. There really needs to be more Wodehouse art than there is. If anyone reading this has no idea what I'm talking about, I strongly recommend checking out the whole Wodehouse section from your local library. Also, you can totally watch the TV series based on his "Jeeves and Wooster" books that they made a few years back. You may even recognize the actor playing Wooster. [link]

Oh heavens, this is amazing! It's always wonderful to meet a fellow Wodehouse fan. It's great to see the lovably misguided Brit mentioned here!

Little fun fact, I actually just rescued two dogs off the street last month and, after a few weeks of putting up signs to no avail, named them Jeeves and Wooster 83 GAAAAH i'm such a nerd.

I love Wodehouse. I'm really glad that he was such a prolific writer, cause it's going to take a while to work through his bibliography.

Aw, sweet!

Indeed! Bertie NEEDS love! He doesn't get enough of it in the stories, that's for sure. XD Poor ditherer. <3

Artoveli In reply to franksands [2011-12-21 06:30:17 +0000 UTC]

Hello, sorry for the late reply!

Thank you for asking, not just going ahead and making the t-shirt. I'd actually prefer it if you didn't put it on a shirt though, just because I do believe the character is still under copyright.

Yes.
Confound it; THIS is why I need to take a holiday sometimes. I start spewing out things that make no sense and cause myself to be very much ashamed.

And yes, yes he was. There will never be another like him. Ever.

I'm trying to track down his Psmith books right now actually, I've only read one of them and loved it. The Blandings Castle books are always great too.

MonkeysUndles In reply to Artoveli [2011-06-18 00:56:51 +0000 UTC]

Ooh... Maybe you can get old printings of 'The Captain'. There's gotta be some place that has them, or copies of them, or re-prints on the internet... I know I've read 'The New Fold' out of my old Lit text book, but that's all I know of the Psmith saga...

YES! The Blanding Books! One of those rare books where (in my opinion) every character was awesome, regardless (though Beach was my favorite, most likely because of the whole drinking and hippo thing *grin*).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Artoveli In reply to MonkeysUndles [2011-06-18 02:40:14 +0000 UTC]

Drinking and hippo? I don't think I've read that one yet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MonkeysUndles In reply to Artoveli [2011-06-18 03:20:01 +0000 UTC]

But you know who I'm talking about, right? Sebastian Beach? The butler who nicks port and brandy from the pantry?
....right?
...I'm I thinking of something else again?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Artoveli In reply to MonkeysUndles [2011-06-18 23:46:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, of course I know Beach! Can't read Blandings Castle and not know who Beach is, that would be like not knowing Lord Emsworth!

Teehee~

To be honest, I have a hard time following the plots, but I'm proud to know the origin of "Ask Jeeves." x3

Artoveli In reply to epic-pegasus [2011-05-04 20:02:37 +0000 UTC]

I find it hard to remember and describe the plots later, cause they all start to run into each other.

I haven't read the Jeeves and Wooster stories yet, but the TV series is one of my most favorite series in the history of television. For that reason, it seems so odd to me to see a Wooster that doesn't look like Hugh Laurie, but I still love this picture. I should use it as inspiration to finally take the time to read the stories...

Ahhh, poor old chuckle-headed Bertie. Never really thought of him as a 'hero' though... Jeeves, certainly, but Bertie always seems more the hapless victim.

Great picture none the less!

(laughs) I'm familiar with that TV series - my family and I actually started watching House M.D. because 'Bertie' was in it. The best bits are when Hugh Laurie uses an expression as House that's similar to one he used as Bertie. Lovely picture! ^^

Artoveli In reply to Hatted-Halfling [2009-10-19 00:08:26 +0000 UTC]

Yep, same here. But I can't really get into House, I much prefer Hugh Laurie as Bertie.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hatted-Halfling In reply to Artoveli [2009-10-19 13:59:22 +0000 UTC]

I used to enjoy House, but the show got to be too dark for me around season 3 or 4 (can't remember which) and I haven't watched it in awhile. But I always end up being a bit frustrated with Jeeves and Wooster - Bertie tries so hard and has such good intentions, but he almost never truely wins. It makes me sad...

If you prefer him as Bertie (and with a British accent), might I reccomend the movie 'The Girl From Rio'? Not only does he once again play a darling little sweetheart of a Brit, we get to see him Samba dance! And it's really him - he had to learn how for the movie!

He plays piano for real too.

Hatted-Halfling In reply to Artoveli [2009-10-20 01:04:05 +0000 UTC]

Do, it's good!

Yah, I know! It is but one of the things that makes him so awesome! ^^ (They have him play the piano as House, too. House used to have a piano in his apartment. Frm what I hear he is now living with a friend - no idea what happened to the piano...) And what's more- (Schapera pops up)

Schapera: Okay, that's enough.

Trickster: But, I was- (pause) How are you even here? I thought you were holding our place at the Temple of Plot?

Schapera: That guy named Edward showed up and said he would holdit for me. And if he has to go I'll just use my muse powers. No more excuses. You're exausted. You sleep now. (drags protesting Trickster off to bed by the ear)
