Description
"Lovely affair. Quite lovely." Doctor Featherstone nodded his head in approval, speaking to the nearest wall flower. "Delightful to see so many Humans all in one place. "Fascinating species, yours is. Absolutely fascinating! Rufetta and Dorene were just describing to me a Human phenomenon called the 'menstrual cycle'. It is incredible what your females endure. I knew your species was resilient but--"
Jer held up his hand to Doctor Featherstone. “Let me stop you there, Comrade. You could not possibly know, of course, but it is not considered politic to discuss the female mystery whilst the other party is attempting to shovel down a late supper.” He held up the plate of casserole that was balanced on his other hand. “Philosophy is considered a much more appropriate topic in this situation. Allow me to start us off: How big is big? What is your opinion?”
"Oh, I see. Terribly sorry. I have no reference for this sort of thing, you know." The Doctor adjusted his glasses a bit. "Well, it is entirely based on the context. In the medical profession one may have a 'big' tumor, which might be several microspans across. But that is infinitesimal when one is speaking in terms of planetary bodies. Size is completely relative to what is being compared."
Jer nodded knowingly. “I myself subscribe to the school of thought that big is this big.” He said, making no gesture or expression to indicate how big ‘this’ might be. “Now, touching on the matter of fancy bread... Where is it? In the heart, or in the head?”
The Doctor nodded at Jer's question. "Well, that would depend entirely upon where your digestive tract is, now wouldn't it?"
Jer considered this. “Which, as you know, is in neither of those locations. So I suppose the real question in this case is: Where is one’s spiritual digestive tract located? Hm. You are a deep thinker, Sir.” Jer took a bite of his food and chewed pensively. He was enjoying this far too much. “What say you pose the next question.”
The Doctor nodded. "Well, it depends on your species. Let's see now... Fiction: cultural enrichment or a waste of valuable time?"
Jer swept his right hand up in a lofty, cosmos-encompassing gesture. “What is fiction except a set of parables whereby the universe-- that’s us-- attempts to understand itself-- also us?”
"Mm. Interesting." The Doctor bobbed his head, watching the dancing as they spoke. "Have you ever encountered the operas of Belgalis? Weeks long affair chronicling the beginning of time to the present entirely in metaphor. Both incredible and complete nonsense."
Jer nodded. “We have something similar on Earth. It’s called Monty Python’s Flying Circus.”
"Flying Circus? Sounds entertaining." The doctor bobbed his head a bit. It's incredible the diversity of entertainment between species. The Gork find sitting and staring at boulders for days on end massively entertaining."
Jer closed his eyes and shook his head. “They would.” He set his empty plate on a nearby table and shook out his arms. “Well, Sir, now that my hands are empty, I may greet you properly, man-to-man. My name is Jerome Van Hooft. My friends call me Jer. My enemies call me Toulouse Lautrec. And you are?”
"I am Dr. Cloud Featherstone. I am delighted to meet you. It's nice to have someone who can hold an intelligent conversation on occasion."
Jer nodded. “On occasion I am capable of such.” He held up his hand. When the Doctor went to shake it, Jer stopped him. “No no, for us, the scholar’s handshake. Attend: Hold out your opposite hand like mine...” When this was done, Jer gently slapped his fingers past the Doctor’s hand, then backwards again so that the backs of their fingers brushed. “Now we each make a fist and touch knuckles, like so, at which point we both spring our hands back, opening the fingers with a waggle. Very good! Now, once more, at speed.”

Jer Van Hooft finally makes his debut appearance in my gallery, in all his slightly-pudgy, be-bowtie'd glory! He's been a pretty major character in the RP I'm writing with chill13 , but I've never gotten around to posting a picture of the guy! He's pretty fun to write for, as you can probably tell.
The writing here is from the beginning of the story, when he was meeting Doctor Cloud Featherstone for the first time. Jer is my character, so I wrote for him, and Featherstone is Chill's character, so she wrote for him.
