Description

“Is this what storms always smell like?” Tertio asked. He really liked it. It smelled wet, and deep, and exciting, somehow.

Anne smiled, closing her eyes for a moment and breathing deeply. “Storms always smell good. But this one’s also flavoured by the sea.”

"Storms ARE great!" Finn enthused. "You get to watch the trees whip all around and sometimes the waves get huge."

"There's kite flyin’ on Filniss when the wind is just right." Rover said.

“Now you can do a cartwheel, we’re outside!” Tertio said, looking at Finn.

"WOOO!" Finn ran ahead and leaped onto his hands, executing an enthusiastic, if clumsy, cartwheel. He landed on his feet, pinwheeling his arms a bit before catching his balance. He stood on one foot and shook his new leg a bit, testing out its hold. "This thing really does stay on good."

Tertio threw his arms up. “Woo! Yeah!” He executed a few cartwheels of his own, getting ahead of the group a little bit.

Finn broke into a run. He hadn't realized just HOW much he had missed doing so in the last couple days. He laughed as the rain finally began coming down.

Tertio stopped and stared around, as big drops of rain began to splat on his hair and face, and the surrounding terrain, patterning the path with polka-dots. The smell had changed slightly, too, taking on a freshness that hadn’t been there before. He stared at Finn, then whirled to grin at Anne. “RAIN!” He shouted, happily.

Anne laughed at his excitement, but she herself was kind of glad to feel rain on her skin again, too.

Tertio's enthusiasm was catchy, and soon Finn too was spinning in the rain. Suddenly he stopped. "Hey. You want to see where I go to school?"

Tertio was running around with his arms outstretched at his sides. When Finn stopped, he also jogged to a stop nearby. “Is it near here?” He panted.

"Yeah. It's just up this hill." Finn darted inland.

"Hold on. Where are you going?" Flyspur demanded.

"Just to the school." Finn hooked a thumb over his shoulder.

"I'm coming with you." He glanced back at Jylee and Jyl with an apologetic look. "I'll be back in a minute."

Finn opened his mouth to say that he had walked all over this island alone and he didn't need supervision. But then it occurred to him that maybe Flyspur just wanted to come. The thought made his heart ache a little bit. "Okay. Come on."

Tertio and Finn waited for Flyspur to catch up, then went up the hill as a group.

“I’ve never been to a real school, you know.” Tertio said. His hair was starting to stick to his face in big loops. “When I lived with Nanna I was too young, then I was a Ring-Rat, and now I just do school in my room or in one of the access centers, and my teacher’s just, like, Mina or Rand or Benson, or whoever’s teaching that day. I’ve only seen schools in movies!”

"Really? Man you are lucky. It was the same teacher every day. And ssssooooooooo much dumb family economics! Blue hated it too, didn't you?"

"I... actually did." Flyspur admitted.

Tertio smiled. “I guess you’ll be doing school with us from now on! And Kessie, too- Anne won’t let her off the hook, I’m sure...”

"Geography was kind of dumb too. But I liked it anyway. I mean, what's the point of learning where Australia is when you can never go there. But they did always show us videos of the cool animals that lived there. So it wasn't so bad. One time when we were doing North America, Dad brought this ANCIENT video of his great great grandpa riding a bull. Everyone thought it was so great!"

Tertio looked at him with wide eyes. “You’re remembering stuff again.”

Finn stopped in his tracks and just stared into the wet forest. Here, under the trees was much drier, but when water did find its way down, it accumulated and dropped in big splashes. "I AM!" He gasped. "Great, Great Grandpa... worked at a rodeo! A REAL one! Dad... Dad would show me pictures of him." He reached up and touched his hat. Then, in a flash he was in that smoke-filled hallway again, Dad’s hat settling on his head. This time there was weapons fire and shouting in the distance. The lights were flickering and his heart was pounding.

Finn dropped to his knees and covered his ears as if that would somehow make the memory go away. "No, NO!" He screamed. "I don't WANT to remember any more!"

Flyspur bent down beside him, feeling his heart sink. It had been going so well for a moment.

Tertio knelt on the other side of him. “Think of catterpups!” He shouted, trying to break the memory. “And Gobby! Your cool new leg! The Casablanca!”

"You were going to show Tertio the school." Flyspur reminded him.

"Catterpups! Catterpups! Catterpups!" Finn chanted, rocking a little, tears mingling with the rain. No more of the memory revealed itself. Just those few seconds of horror and heartbreak repeating themselves. After a minute or two it faded and he could actually hear the rain and feel the wet sand. He took in a long shaky breath and he sat up, wiping his eyes. "Sorry..." He whimpered. This was getting really embarrassing. How was Tertio ever going to think he was cool if he kept breaking down like this?

Tertio shook his head. “Don’t worry about it.” He gave an embarrassed chuckle. “I cry all the time!” He groaned and put his face in his palms. “I even cried on television today...”

Finn managed a little wet chuckle. "You did!"

There was a flash of lightning, and a loud BOOM of thunder. Tertio jumped, and looked around warily. “Should we... be close to trees during a thunder storm?” He looked at the others uncertainly. “You’re the experts, but, isn’t it... dangerous?”

The others jumped a little at the unexpectedly loud crack of thunder, but Flyspur shook his head.

"No. It's not really dangerous. Lightning hits the tallest things. Death by lightning is incredibly rare. But we really should be getting back."

"Yeah. I'm kinda cold and wet. And there is the school anyways." Finn pointed to a large metallic ring jutting out just above the ground. It surrounded a flat patch of sand.

“Yeah but...” Tertio trailed off. He was pretty sure that if you were standing under that tall thing when it got struck, the lightning would arc over to you too. But he didn’t want to argue. He peered over to where Finn was pointing. “That was your school? But, where’s the building? Were all your classes just outdoors? What about desks? Or lockers where you could keep your stuff! What about the science equipment?”

There was another crack of thunder that made him jump and look around nervously. “Never mind, we should probably get going...”

"Yes. Yes. Come on." Flyspur urged. While getting hit by lightning was very, VERY unlikely, he wasn't taking any chances. "Um... Speaking of lightning, Finn." He began as he led the boys down a trail. "It would really be a good idea if you weren't' out in the open during lightning storms, especially when you are wearing that leg."

"What do you mean?"

"Just... be careful around electricity, okay?" He shuddered, remembering the state Rover and Anne had been in when they'd got them off the Shaksa ship. The more he thought of it the more he wanted to get the boys inside. But he also didn't want to frighten them. "Come on. Hurry. Let’s get you out of the rain."

Tertio nodded at Flyspur’s words, happy to get on their way. He turned to Finn as they walked. “Yeah. The whole reason any of this happened is that your older self got hit with a Shaksa weapon- the Shaksa have electrified pikes- and it messed with the metal plate in his head.” He paused. “Wait... Do you remember anything on the Shaksa ship? That must be where you first showed up, right?”

Finn shuddered, and not because of the rain. He brought his hand up to his chest. So much had been happening that he hadn't thought about it much. It had been incredible, seeing a real human for the first time, and intense- with hiding from the Shaksa and getting caught- and painful, with the burns that felt just like waking up in the healing house. "Yeah. I remember. I got blasted in the chest. But that didn't stop me from keeping Anne safe!"

Tertio gave a weird little chuckle. “I guess that’s something we have in common... You and me, and Duo- we’re all here because of the Shaksa!”

"Ew." Finn said, not liking that thought at all, but not particularly denying it.

The lights of Jylee's house shone through the woods.

When they saw the lights, Tertio marvelled. “It’s still morning, but it’s so dark we need lights!” He looked up at the sky through the leaves. It wasn’t dark like space, or like night, but it certainly wasn’t the sunny sky he had come to expect over the last few days. He’d definitely feel better once they were inside. “Come on, we’re almost there!” He broke into a jog.

There was a slight buzz next to Flyspur's ear, and then a voice that only he could hear in the rain. It spoke in an impossibly deep, sinister whisper: "If you want those boys to survive the night you will turn around and go back to the school. That poison in your hand can just as easily be administered with darts."

Flyspur's feet kicked up sand as he screeched to a halt, his blood freezing in his veins. He looked around for the source of the sound, or for any visible figure in the trees around them.

"Drones can be invisible. Don't think they will be safe if they go inside."

Flyspur felt everything inside him churn in on himself. He should have known better than to be with the children! He forced his voice to sound casual. "Um... I think I dropped something just back there. Go on inside. I'll be there in a minute, just a minute." Without waiting for an answer he turned and darted back up the trail.

Tertio looked back. “What? What did you drop? Hey!” The sight of Flyspur running off alone reminded him that that was exactly what he shouldn’t be doing right now. “No, wait! Don’t wander off alone!” He started running after him.

"Hey! What?" Finn followed after Tertio. "I thought we were going in."

Flyspur whipped around, his face intense, desperate and freckled with soul spots. "GO... INSIDE! NOW!" He stabbed his right set of arms violently toward the house. They couldn't follow him. They COULDN'T! He whipped back around, praying they would obey.

Finn stopped so fast he fell on his backside, his eyes wide in shock. He had seen Blue angry a couple of times. But he had never seen this.

Tertio halted for a moment, surprised. But not put off. “Kira nuts...” He said to himself. Something was very wrong! He started running again, and raised his comm as he did, dialling Anne.

...

Anne felt her comm buz, and answered. “Tertio? Where are you guys?”

“Something’s wrong!” He shouted. He looked distressed, and was clearly running. “Flyspur’s running away, back to the school we just left. He’s upset, and telling us to go ahead to the house! It’s Kira nuts all over again!”

Kessie’s ears pricked up. “Kira nuts!” She turned to the projection. “Sorry guys, sorry Ooflit. I have to turn this off and go help my brother and my uncle!” She ended the call and stood up, Gobby rolling back up onto her shoulder.

Anne frowned, very concerned. She brought up the map. “I can see you, and him. We’ll be right there!”

Rover stood up and instantly slipped into his boots. "Tarnation! We should'a made him stay smack dab in the middle of us!" He ran for the door.

"Kira nuts?" The doctor asked, following as well. "I don't understand."

...

Finn leaped up and was right on Tertio's heels. "Blue! What's WRONG with you?!"

Flyspur kept running. "Don't hurt them. Don't hurt them." He huffed, not sure if the voice could hear him or not. "I can stop them. Just... Just give me a minute, please!"

The voice replied. "Speak nothing of me and I will give you one minute."

"Okay. Okay. I promise." Flyspur slowed down just a little, now making sure the boys were right behind him. He burst into the clearing, slowing his run even further and glancing over his shoulder to make sure both of them were in the right place. Then he ducked down and seemed to slap the ground.

A domed forcefield appeared over the classroom, trapping both boys inside.

Finn, still running when it came up, slammed into the forcefield, once again ending up falling backwards into the wet sand. "Blue! What gives!?" He hopped up and pounded on the forcefield.

Flyspur only stopped for a moment, his wet face full of anguish. "I'm sorry." He said before hurrying off into the woods.

The instant he was out of sight something slammed into the back of his head. There was a flash of stars, and he hit the ground hard. He could feel someone unbuckling his comm as everything faded to black.

...

“Kira nuts.” Kessie repeated. “It means Flyspur’s trying to protect us by pretending everything’s fine.” She didn’t bother with her shoes, which were lace-ups and would take too long. “Come on!” She darted out the door after Rover.

Anne was right behind them, still watching the map. “What’s going on, Tertio? It looks like you’ve stopped.”

“Flyspur’s trapped us in a force field!” Tertio’s voice shouted. He sounded like he was pounding on something with his other fist. “We’re in the school, trapped! He said he was sorry, and ran over the hill!”

Finn was instantly on his knees trying to feel around the metal rim of the school. "There's a sliding panel here somewhere! I saw it when the teacher's remote went dead! It's NOT supposed to be turned up all the way like this!"

Rover stayed in the lead, knowing exactly where the trail to the school was, and it's little twists and turns. He led them all into the clearing with a glowing dome in the center. He hurried over and deactivated it. "Where did he go?!"

"That way!" Finn pointed.

Sure enough, Jssfloon tracks headed off in that direction. Then they abruptly ended with a vague body-shaped imprint in the sand. Flyspur's comm was lying right in the center.

Kessie caught up just as the dome was deactivated, and she and Tertio ran up the hill alongside one another. They came to a stop with the others, around the silhouette.

“No!” Tertio gasped.

"BLUE!" Rover shouted into the wind and rain, frantically looking for any other trace of where he had gone, but finding none.

Not everyone is happy that Flyspur is back on Jssfloon...

Also, Tertio's never experienced weather before, and Finn is a clone of Rover's child self and is slowly remembering things that happened to him before the crash that stranded him on this alien planet when he was a kid (the first time).
