Heh, I find it amusing how quickly Faida lost her calm after Africa rejected her offer. And while Faida certainly could've worded her offer differently, since she basically told Africa, 'You're staying with us and it's decided', I think she may have a point. Yes, leopards are solitary animals for a reason, it's a tactic that helps them survive, but Africa is in the new territory now, and it appears that there are much more predators at lake Magadi. There are lions, hyenas and wild dogs, while in Africa's old territory Africa and Chui were probably the largest predators, plus smaller felines like servals and caracals. More prey = more predators = greater competition between hunters, so living in a group may indeed be more profitable.

After reading the comments I feel alone in thinking this way, but....I honestly don't see how Africa could take Faida's words as a threat.  :/  Faida merely pointed out that she saved the cub when she didn't have to.  That's it.  There was no feel of "So you'd better do as I say or else!" hanging in the air around that, at least not from what I could see.  I can see Africa maybe being a bit moody about the whole situation—a hyena rescued her cubs when she couldn't; she probably feels like she failed as a mother — but nothing that would warrant her thinking that Faida was actually planning on attacking her and/or the cubs.  She comes off to me as being overly touchy here.

Africa is being a douchebag :/ can't she just say "thank you" and refuse help in a less... demeaning way? i mean, she shouldn't be forced to accept someone's help, but i sure as hell would be grateful if someone saved those who mean the world to me.

and if i were Faida, i'd be like "fine. suit yourself. just come back anytime". cuz really, i don't help those who don't cooperate.

besides, i've always hated it when someone insists on acting the way their species do. so what if she's a leopard? you won't die if you break the blasted rule, lady! think about the children! i'm a girl. does that mean i should like makeup and accessories or should i act the way i like and spit at the gender rules this shitty world abides by?? see where i'm coming from?

Africa refused and thanked Faida, explaining why she didn't want to stay, then Faida turns around and, in Africa's eyes, threatens her ("I saved your cub from the lions. And what if I'd chosen to walk past?). I wouldn't want to stay around someone like that, especially if it put my children in danger. She IS thinking about her children, that Faida might not be the safest character for them to hang around.
There is usually a reason animals act as they do (as Magearon said). Leopards aren't raised to be capable of being social, they are raised to be capable to survive. Being solitary is a survival advantage for leopards, otherwise they wouldn't be so. Yes, Africa could question solitude, but she is a leopard, she is thinking based on her morals and what has helped her survive in the past, and she has her cubs to worry about. It would be wrong for her to drag her cubs into an unknown situation where they could be potentially hurt or killed, especially when Faida seems to have threatened her and her cubs.

XSamuraiEdgeX In reply to DethJackal [2019-03-24 14:44:00 +0000 UTC]

yes but i'm talking about a fictional leopard here, not the ones in real life. remember that Africa used to be more open-minded than that (when she was friends with a gazelle) until Giza kept brain-washing her with the "don't be friends with pray! me no like! blah blah" crap.

don't get me wrong, i do realize carnivores need meat to live and befriending their pray would just lessen their chances of survival, but the whole POINT that being a total bigot about your beliefs to the point of douchebaggery and close-mindedness is one of the most unbearable things i see in a character. know what i mean?

Africa was being a bit of a jerk in her attitude towards someone who, if it hadn't been for their help, her cups would've been goners. that's why Faida "threatened" her in the first place, she didn't say what she said unprovoked. she just wanted to help. even if she overreacted as well. i mean if someone refused my help, that doesn't make them ungrateful.

Africa by no means should be forced to accept a stranger's help, and i don't blame her for the mistrust. but a bit more of gratitude would be nice, then go on her way.

so all in all, they're both at fault here in their communication Africa being hostile towards a potential ally who saved her cubs, and Faida wanting to force help on her and getting angry just because Africa preferred to be on her own. at least, that's the way i saw it.

Are you sure about that?

The statement starts off as .....Really, is that how you show gratitude? As in, I was expecting something from you for doing the deed, and wasn't just doing this to be a good person.

Then it goes to, I saved your cubs from the lions.

You owe me for saving them, but considering that he saved Africa just the same as saving her cubs why even mentioning them in that statement. She could have simply said, I saved you from the lions....you owe me. But using the cubs' lives is a low blow to a mother that was forced to watch them being put into a dangerous situation and helpless to save them. It also could be taken as a threaten statement towards the cubs, almost as if, to say next time ...I won't help them or I could have done something to them ...rather than save them from the lions.

It's not a good statement that would have a positive reaction from any mother.

PerpetualTwilight21 In reply to Lunarsun [2019-03-23 23:30:31 +0000 UTC]

Yes I'm sure.  Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't take it that way at all.  And I'm a mother in real life ( two sons: a 3-year-old and a 21-month-old ).  I wouldn't be thrilled, no, especially if I had gone through everything that Africa had, but just saying "Is this how you show gratitude?" wouldn't convey anything other than disappointment on the part of the speaker to me.  Faida never explicitly says she was expecting something in return ffrom Africa for saving her cubs: everything you just posted is pure speculation and inference.  While it's true that that COULD have been Faida's intent ( I'm not the one making the comic, after all ) it can be interpreted other ways as well.  You and several others read this page and felt Faida was being threatening.  I read this page and felt she was frustrated that Africa wasn't choosing to accept living with her and her pack because she DOES genuinely care about them ( or perhaps because she wants to build a massive multi-species army and live like a queen?  Who knows.  XD ).  Either way I don't see it as a low blow at all because it really doesn't feel to me like she is trying to manipulate or threaten, just point out out that alternative ways of life do exist, and that they might be better and safer for Africa and her cubs.  True, she could have been less abrasive about it, but again, it doesn't strike me as being threatening in and of itself.  She's just frustrated that Africa is rejecting her help: it's possible she's taking it too personally, as if Africa were saying "Thanks, but living in packs is for idiots.".  If I were her I would have found a more gentle way to point out that living and hunting alone weren't ideal, but if Africa had snapped at me like that I would have backed off and been all "Ok, if that's what you think's best go for it.  Just remember you're always welcome here if you change your mind." knowing full well that Africa just may well change her mind when one of her cubs was killed by another predator while she was off hunting or when another leopard appeared to kick her out of her territory.  Whether you think Africa and her cubs should accept Faida's offer or not at the end of the day she is right: she DID save Mosi, sheltered Binti, and orchestrated Africa's escape from the tree.  And she didn't have to do any of it.  Africa did say "thank you", which was nice, but she didn't have to be so touchy when refusing Faida's offer.  A simple "Thanks again for your help and concern, but I am sure about this and I know what I am doing." in a calm, attitude-free tone would have sufficed.

Magearon In reply to XSamuraiEdgeX [2019-03-22 20:35:17 +0000 UTC]

Felines are solitary by nature. Living in a pack environment for them breeds violence. Think about lion prides: male lions are constantly killing cubs that aren't theirs, taking over prides by killing or running out the previous males. If a pride's territory is invaded, they fight to the death for the sake of staying together. If a leopard's territory is invaded, they have the option to run away because they are solitary creatures.

XSamuraiEdgeX In reply to Magearon [2019-03-24 14:22:56 +0000 UTC]

i understand. but remember that in a comic like this, reality doesn't apply very much. you'd never see hyenas saving other cubs and taking them in IRL. so what should stop Africa from joining the pack? not that she has to, of course. just saying that rules of reality doesn't seem to play a big part here.

so whether she's gonna join or not, it's up to the authoress to decide. we'll just have to wait.

Magearon In reply to XSamuraiEdgeX [2019-03-24 17:37:09 +0000 UTC]

In the past, Africa's instincts have proven to be very important to the plot, so it would make sense that her feline instincts will continue to influence her decisions.

Sabreleopard [2019-03-20 22:36:45 +0000 UTC]

I understand that leopards are supposed to be solitary animals, but if I were Africa, I would really think about it. I mean she could use some security for her cubs. Even Mosi and Binti seem to approve of Faida's idea. Plus, it may seem weird and unusual, but making allies with the hyenas and moving in with them sounds like a great idea. Plus, it would be a sign of good grace. Besides, it's the least Africa can do to repay her for saving her cubs (and sending Sabra to rescue her). If she can't do that, then just offer them a kill as gratitude (just a thought). I mean, does anyone remember The Jungle Book (no, not the Disney one, the original version, by Rudyard Kipling himself)? Sometimes Baloo can be seen with the wolves, as he teaches the cubs the Law of the Jungle. He's a bear and bears are meant to be solitary, but does Baloo make that argument to the wolves? No, he seems just fine being among the wolves and vice versa (Just an example). There's also Bagheera among the wolves too, but he's usually by himself (or Mowgli).

A new character, eh? Interesting, I wonder if he (or she) is either a leopard or a cheetah.
