The Asarra corporation is well known for supplying a large part of the Coalition military with all sorts of standard-issue armaments, but the company also has its own in-house experimental R&D division as well. Some of the products from this secretive division are, of course, meant for specific CAF contracts. Others, however, are kept for the use of internal "Security Personnel" only.

One of these internal products is the PS44 Hybrid BAL/DER. A weapon that combines ballistic and energy-based modes into one firearm. When used in shotgun mode, the PS44 fires standard 10 Gauge shells using a pump action. Excess kinetic energy from the shell launching process is stored in rails on the top and bottom of the firing mechanism. When switched to the directed energy mode, this stored kinetic energy is expelled as focused bolts.

This kind of compact hybrid weaponry is extremely sought-after by the Coalition Procurement Service, as the wide range of deployment environments the Coalition Armed Forces see action in currently force Coalition battalions to carry weaponry for each situation.
After a lengthy investigation as to why Asarra's developments aren't shared with the larger military industrial complex, the company has finally decided to release a limited number of PS44's for field trails under close corporate oversight.
