Description Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, Ireland, July 2005.

I'm really annoyed with the quality of this scan. But hopefully before too long I'll be able to buy a proper neg scanner and then I can resubmit all these crappy scans.

I have a horizontal shot of the same view... I can never decide which one I like better. Feedback gratefully accepted.

I discovered NeatImage not that long after this submission and I'm pretty happy with that.

However, I do have my Nikon Coolscan finally, and am very pleased with the results. There is of course visible film grain in many scans, which people love to point out, but that is a natural part of film, and we are so used to seeing slick and smooth digital images these days we have forgotten how much we used to love the look of film grain.

I think we are losing some detail from the scan but as a whole, the shot is beautiful. Nice saturation of colors and the cows in the BG are great. I sort of agree with *metagore about the depth, but it's not so much to ruin the image. Nice one.

Thanks so much! My scanner is a piece of you know what. Hence my search for a professional neg scanner. A fellow dA-er put me onto a little program called Neat Image, which seems to remove noise really quite well. So I've used that on the recent sunset series I've submitted, and probably will from now on, until I have an alternative.

Definitely this one is better than the other horizontal shot. I think this gives you a feeling of immensity of height which makes me feel more free. and i like how the whole top of the picture is free to show the water and sky. I really like this picture.

Very nice shot, I think I like this better than thte landscpe shot - the bucolic scene in the background (ie the cows, OK I like big words!) adds some interest to the scene as well - I think it works well as a bit of a 'summary' shot of Ireland, incorporating rugged scenery,a pastoral scene and the sea - all quintessentially Irish and all in one shot! Great job!

June - I only get about two days in Dublin, but I thought I might head up to Glendalough as well on one of the days.

aspirit In reply to gky [2006-02-26 06:05:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, well Glendalough is definitely worth it. Dublin is also very photogenic, but the weather is a bit unpredictable. We were there in July and out of 5 days in Dublin, only one had blue skies and it was the day we left! It was cloudy at Glendalough too, so be photographically prepared. It is incredibly lush and green there... and there are some amazing photo opportunities - especially at the lakes and the cemetary.

I very much doubt there will be one for many years now Getting a mortgage is next on the agenda

We travelled for three months last year, covering 7 countries... that was supposed to be the last big one! I am hoping to see a lot more of my own country in the next few years though.

crimson-skies [2006-02-25 15:08:21 +0000 UTC]

spectacular! it's very eye-catching and beautiful so i can't really criticise it. BUT i will because even though i don't have a problem with the way this is composed and i really like it, i see another way of doing it. out of the 3 parts, the rock and green area are dominant. green area is very attractive due to its juicy, vibrant colour and the rock area has very interesting colours and textures. however, there is slightly more of the green area and it draws one's attention a little more than the rocky part. so maybe if you tried cropping a tiiiny bit off the green part and see whether that will balance out the two halves? overall it's a great image though and i don't see a reason for you to change anything, i'm just being picky i am curious to see the horizontal panorama!

No, no, that's a great comment, thank you so much!!! A couple of people have mentioned they would like to see the horizontal one, so I will submit that today. The composition is a bit different.

I agree with mike's comment about the lack of depth, it' hard to get a sense of distance but that said it makes it interesting and a little unreal looking which got me staring at the screen which has to be a good thing

The scan looks quite good to me, but I can understand your problem because I have the same when scanning slides. Someone on dA put me on to Neat Image [link] which I have found very good. I have the free one which obviously doesn't do everything the bought version does, but still good.

As for your photo, those look like cows in the backgrouns so I'm thinking this is some very deep chasm and you are on the other side. I think it' quite a well balanced composition with a interestesting foreground.

Absolutely gorgeous photograph, mmm - the Irish countryside And I thought I'd seen something this summer in England...

More technically... your composition is excellent, the inclusion of just a touch of blue of the water and more countryside in the distance at the top of the frame is a beautiful contrast to the very vibrant & lush greens in the foreground. The cows look so tiny there too
Great job!

I've been at the Cliffs of Moher years ago. Incredible. This picture has an interesting composition, and flatness (as you call it), but in my view it does not really express the Cliffs of Moher. Of the three parts of the composition, the green part (which is the most friendly part of the three) dominates (in shape, color and light). The rocky part is actually the least eye catching of the three. Having said all that (and having anoyed you with my critical view ) I still think the composition is good, and I like the 'flatness'. I just don't think it would have occured to me that this is an image of the Cliffs of Moher if you had not written it. That's not necessarilly a bad thing.

jvdgoor In reply to jvdgoor [2006-02-25 22:04:10 +0000 UTC]

And I agree with you about the touristic shots. Makes no sense to shoot pictures that already exist by the thousands. Anyway, I emphasized on that aspect of your submission (the name), but my remark on the composition and the 'flatness' still stands. I know what you mean about names. I am very happy with using numbers or dates myself. See you...

Actually I completely agree with you. One of the things I 'try' to do when I travel is find the view or the detail of a famous tourist attraction that is perhaps being ignored. The 'actual' cliffs you see in postcards and brochures were behind me during this photo... not many people were interested in shooting in this direction, but I thought it was much more interesting, and much more Irish. I hate when all my travel shots look like everybody else's

I should have called this something else perhaps, but I'm not very good with coming up with names on the spur of the moment!!

I think the scan gives it a bit of graininess, which gives it more of a feel of an old fashioned photograph. I like it.

It's a very interesting location with lots of potential. (are you going to show us the landscape version?)

The colors in this are just amazing, what film was this shot on?

As to any contructive comments on this, the only thing that I can say is that there's nothing in the scene to provide depth to the shot. Including some of the landscape near you (if possible ) would probably have provided some extra depth so it doesn't look flat.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aspirit In reply to MichaelLaird [2006-02-25 03:26:14 +0000 UTC]

Funny, that's the thing I like the most about it The flatness gives it a funny sort of look I think. Perhaps making it more unique than just your average landscape. But I really appreciate your comments, thank you

I can't remember exactly, but throughout my trip, I used mainly Kodak 200, so I imagine that's what it was. The light in Ireland is really great for taking these sorts of shots.. and this one was facing about a 45 degree angle from the late afternoon sun, which probably helped the colour - also my best friend the polariser was there . The most photographed cliffs were directly behind me, and my photos of them turned out crap because of the glare.
