Description Taken in Manarola, one of the Cinque Terre, Liguria, Italy, June 2005.

See also Manarola I .

Manarola was our favourite out of the five towns, and the one we stayed in. This is taken from one of the terrace walks, just above the town. I loved it there, and I would go back in an instant. It has everything my heart desires - delicious food and wine, beautiful people, amazing weather, fascinating architecture, vibrant colour, and picturesque views.

Would love to hear what you think.

what a pretty place, I like how you have composed this, you have really used the light and shadows of the land to your advantage, the subtle candy colours of the buildings is charming against the green hills.

Beautiful! It looks like a fabulous spot! Just as a suggestion, do you think a little more contrast and/or saturation would improve it? But it is a great shot nonetheless.

Maybe it would, but I prefer it this way. Those houses are so bright, I didn't want this one to look unnatural, and it was taken at that time of day when the light is starting to darken.

I love the composition of this, almost unnatural.

Its a pity it wasn't a sunner day, which would have made this sensational, but I guess i can't blame you for the weather...

Thanks for your comment.

It was actually quite a sunny day but this was taken quite late in the afternoon and from a point of view where the sun was only really on the houses and not on anything else. This is the reason why the surrounding hills are quite dark, which in my opinion is what makes the photo's composition strong. Also I am currently going through a 'desaturated' phase.

(looks at it again) Compositionally its very good, nice clean curves and all that, although there is something (and i haven't decided whether its a good thing) very claustrohobic about it. Possibly the way the hill on the right looms very much in the foreground, for much more of the photo area than you at first think.

Although that sentence barely made sense.

Ah, the desaturated phase... I know it well. Possibly in this one it might have looked quite nice to desaturate the green/cyan more than yellow of the buildings, make them stand out a little more. Mind you, I might be totally wrong.

Awesome shot. I love the lay of the land so to speak, how the landscape in the foreground cuts an angle across the landscape in the background. I love the shadows and light you captured and what an amazing little town Awesome composition.
