Description See also Manarola I and Manarola II .

This is Vernazza, one of the Cinque Terre, in Liguria, North-West Italy. I am looking down at the town square where there are dozens of restaurants and cafes with brightly coloured umbrellas to shelter holiday makers from the hot sun. We sat beneath one and enjoyed a shakerato - iced coffee, made in a cocktail shaker, no milk or cream, just excellent Italian coffee and sugar.

Hope you enjoy the picture as much as I do the memory.

I scanned this from negative on my Nikon Coolscan V ED. I think I've finally figured out how to work it to its maximum potential.

I love this one. The composition really fits the cramped, ridiculously tall buildings. Might have preferred it from a floor or two lower, and/or with the umbrella/street cropped out, but thats just being picky.

Theres a sort of washed out feeling to the colours that I recall was in the other ones from the same place, but it works much better in this. I don't know if it was lack of a uv filter, film choice or post processing, but its certainly a nice choice.

I really need to get better at doing low contrast, I think I'm not brave enough...!

Thank you!

The light is different in different parts of the world, I find. The washed out feeling was partly that, and partly post processing. I can't remember what film I used, but it was probably plain old Kodak 200. And I would never go anywhere without a UV filter! That would be a sin!!!

You should give low contrast a go, it's quite revelatory.

Yeah, UV filters... I've got to get one of those...

Its just the laziness!

wow such a odd image, well not odd but odd in the way
the colors and distance really remind the eye of a painting,
of some tiny world. i think its a wonderful photo

A very nice and interesting shot. It would be interesting to see this after the thresholds-curve treatment in PS, to bring down the blown-out whites. Still a very compelling image.

Yeah, that actually looks a little different on the full size version. I guess you always lose a bit of detail when you reduce it. Thanks for your comment!

cream68 In reply to aspirit [2006-06-07 13:07:21 +0000 UTC]

That's true, hadn't really considered that. On some sites where I post, I get horrible compression artifacts for that very reason.

aspirit In reply to cream68 [2006-06-07 22:57:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's a shame isn't it. The thing I notice you lose the most is clarity or sharpness. Sometimes I have to unsharp mask a second time once I've reduced the size - but often the effect isn't as good as the first time.

cream68 In reply to aspirit [2006-06-07 23:09:21 +0000 UTC]

It really is. I'm currently trying to educate myself on methods to reduce loss of quality due to resizing.

aspirit In reply to cream68 [2006-06-08 11:20:34 +0000 UTC]

I think one of the tricks is to do some more work on the image once it's been resized. It's just a bit more challenging, and I have yet to do it confidently.

That seems to be part of it, which can create problems of its own, it seems.

Wonderful to look at and photograph, but no way could I live in such conditions. I cannot imagine living surrounded by so many people. Is there a market underneath all those umbrellas? It is all very interesting to look at and you photographed the scene well.

It is very crowded, yes. But such a relaxed lifestyle. There are just a lot of cafes and restaurants down there. Thanks so much for your comment!
