Description

There is something very intimate and tricky in making a portrait of yourself. As an artist I love to make things more beautiful than they are. It is very hard to be honest when you draw yourself, but I tried. So, this is me on a good hairday Β

I was asked to send in my picture for a newspaper, I made this instead.

It's a digital painting (photoshop).

Try the strip test.Β  If you placed a mask over the entire canvas cutting out a rectangle that is short and wide, then placed this over, say, the forehead, would the values describe hemispheric convexity?Β  Would the left side appear to recede from near to far?Β  Would the left edge appear to turn in space?Β Β

The details work overtime to compensate for what's not done in the foundation.Β  By "not done" I don't mean not there; I mean that it has not been worked through sufficiently to substantiate the desired illusion - work started at this stage was not completed before moving to the next stage.Β  More attention at completing this stage will make it easier to subordinate and integrate the detailing that follows.Β  Β

That said, the work gets better and better.Β  Technically the best so far.Β  Β

Any time.Β  BTW - aside from the strip test, try executing with a different tool.Β  Instead of a fine, definite line, exercise with the spray can (CSP) or air brush (PS).Β  Here there will be a completely different approach to edges and lines.Β  You will of necessity work with tones - from the ground up, not after the fact.Β
