Description My third silversmithing project - a 4 cm diameter sterling silver tree.
Given how much silver leaf I use in my lampwork beads, I think I could really use a silver tree.

It was quite a saga to pierce out all the branches. I killed 4 saw blades in the process, and then another one while cutting the loop, which apparently isn't bad. Thankfully I had my talented teacher on hand to help neaten things up, and solder on the loop for me.
(Yes... my soldering is still terrible. I end up with solder flying all over the piece I'm working on, the workshop, hapless passers-by, etc.)

Hand-finished castings of this design are available in my etsy shop: [link]

curse the soldering!
i just started to use a solder gun, but honestly, i like using a butane torch more!

Arrr, soldering!
Torch is definitely easier. I tried the gun, and failed horribly. I'm all for torch.

Yep, I made it myself With a fair amount of help from my teacher on the fiddly bits, I admit.

Aww, thank you!

I think so too. And it looks like I'll be getting the practice I need, because I already have two requests for trees....

origanime-muckle In reply to Athalour [2009-06-08 15:11:52 +0000 UTC]

oh cool! im not surprised, if anything im shocked you dont have 50 or so requests. it must be hard to make them, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Athalour In reply to origanime-muckle [2009-06-08 16:29:14 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh flattery! Thank you.

It's not that hard to make them, just *very* time consuming. You also need a fair amount of co-ordination with the jeweller's saw. Luckily I have a teacher on hand to help with the tricky spots!

oh good, teachers are always great to have on hand. expecially if there good at what they do, i once had a art teacher who was.. franckly.. rubbish, lol.

Oof, I've had a few of those. The old bags who taught me in school were terrible - it took me years to get my confidence back after they were done with me.

lol, yeah. some tachers are good, but dont pay any attention to the students at all, or they just concerntrate on one, leaving the rest to their own devices.

Athalour In reply to origanime-muckle [2009-06-10 18:18:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... and then you get those awful ones who have to make their students feel bad about themselves all the time.

Really good teachers are rare! And precioussss.

Haha, I would say that 4 is pretty darn good! Given the size and intricacy of the peice, haha. Those little branches would have killed me.
