Description Scientific name: Kentrosaurus aethiopicus
Diet: low-growing plants (at the Zoo they eat dry climate plants)
Projected natural lifespan: 14 years
Length: 4.5 meters (~15 feet)
Weight: 1.2 tonnes (~1.3 tons)
Locality: Lindi, Tanzania (Tendaguru Formation), 152 Ma (Late Jurassic Tithonian)
Exhibit: Shield Bearers

About:
Kentrosaurus was basically the African equivalent of the famous Stegosaurus. It can be distinguished by having more spikes on its tail as well as spikes on its shoulders.

Description and behavior:
Despite their unusual appearance, ankylosaurs and stegosaurs, collectively known as the armored dinosaurs or thyreophorans, appear to be the Mesozoic equivalents of modern pigs, small omnivores that spend their days browsing the forest floor. While ankylosaurs ate plants and meat in equal parts, stegosaurs like Kentrosaurus appear to be more herbivorous. Kentrosaurus in particular would often be seen in open areas or forests browsing the forest floor for plants, though only in places where the spaces between trees are wide enough to hold the Kentrosaurus with its large shoulder spikes. These spikes are among the distinctive features of Kentrosaurus. The ones on their shoulders and tail were the dinosaur's primiary defensive weapons, used to deter predators. The spikes along the mid-back were too thin, even with their keratin extensions, to serve a defensive function, and were used for display instead. Blood could be flushed into the plates to turn their color from the standard gold to more impressive display colors.

At the Zoo:
The Shield Bearers exhibit houses eight Kentrosaurus.

The behavior is mostly inspired by pigs, deer and porcupines.
