Because you have a distorted perception of reality and think that "democracy" means "mob-ruled anarchy" and "police state" means police presence to maintain law and order.

True enough. We are just baggage once they get into power.
Thanks very much for the comment.

nice Rich. Perfect on composition and subject matter. After all the hype of closed roads however, I breezed into Alexandria day in day out for the whole week. Some mates got some mad images also. One grabbed a great one of 'The Chasers' getting busted. All time.

Not at all. APEC stands for Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation. It is a meeting similar to the G8 conferences but for the asian pacific region. I think it was 21 leaders came to town to discuss things like trade, climate, and other such issues that affect this region. The leaders included George W. Bush, Vladimir Putin, China's Hu Jintao and of course Australia's John Howard. Also there were the heads of state from canada, japan, chile, peru and many more.

The last time the APEC summit was in Canada, Prime Minister Chretien sent the RCMP out to pepper-spray protesters. Count yourself lucky.

Didn't they conclude that it was the RCMP's prerogative to use it? "Sgt. Pepper" went out of his way to toss some weight around. The protest was peaceful until he through in his macho Mountie self with a fire hydrant-sized cannister of pepper goo. No matter.
I don't think that use of force was repeated. In Ottawa at the G-8 Summit, there was no violence mainly because the cops weren't in riot gear. They used bicycles to contain the march's route. The crowd didn't even require a bandaid.

ooohhhh. Sounds nasty. I have never been pepper-spray though i have been tear-gassed (not at a protest, someone dropped a cannister for 'fun' at a gig) and that was bad enough Were you among the protesters? After a quick read i see the protests in canada were also, among other things, to do with free speech and the right to protest in the first place and the the protesters were sprayed to keep Indonesia's suharto happy. Its amazing what our leaders will do to their citizens when the lords are over for dinner so to speak. there is something wrong when these leaders are so hated that they have to hide themselves away like that. Not long ago the Dali lama also came to Australia but was welcomed with open arms and walked freely in the streets.

I wasn't there; I have nothing against APEC. I didn't support the protestors in what they were saying, but as Voltaire said, I defend their right to say it.

Thats fair enough. Not all of the protests here were against apec some were aimed at a sole participant such as china for its human rights record or chile for its aquisition of the indigenous Mapuche lands. A few days before the march here the police tried to ban it. I think that brought alot of people out to march who also wished to defend their right march.
