Description Apec summit meeting protests. Sydney 2007.
Around 10,000 people from all walks of life gathered in Sydney for a peaceful protest despite the governments attempts to keep people out of the city. 3m high fences were erected in the city to restrict movement, 3000 police including riot squad with water canons, dog squad, snipers were brought in, a large portion of the police had removed their name badges. Helicopters with search lights circled the city at night. Police claimed their job was a success at keeping the peace. As a witness there, i would say that credit goes not to the police but to the people who marched for being peaceful.

Because you have a distorted perception of reality and think that "democracy" means "mob-ruled anarchy" and "police state" means police presence to maintain law and order.

A picture speaks more than thousand words. Wonderful capture .
How wonderful is a democracy. First we elect our great leaders and afterwards they don't want to hear or see us.

True enough. We are just baggage once they get into power.
Thanks very much for the comment.

nice Rich. Perfect on composition and subject matter. After all the hype of closed roads however, I breezed into Alexandria day in day out for the whole week. Some mates got some mad images also. One grabbed a great one of 'The Chasers' getting busted. All time.

They say one third of the city's population left the city for the weekend. I know that it was pretty deserted when i was in there (aside from the marchers and the police) over the weekend.
thanks very much

what is "Apec" meaning in this case? if you mind me asking...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

atom7 In reply to Morgan-Lou [2007-09-11 08:35:01 +0000 UTC]

Not at all. APEC stands for Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation. It is a meeting similar to the G8 conferences but for the asian pacific region. I think it was 21 leaders came to town to discuss things like trade, climate, and other such issues that affect this region. The leaders included George W. Bush, Vladimir Putin, China's Hu Jintao and of course Australia's John Howard. Also there were the heads of state from canada, japan, chile, peru and many more.

aww I see, that makes sense now. "APEC" can mean so many different things depending on where about in this world you are located. Here in the old continent it meant quite another thing, but I sensed that your APEC was something like a World Summit. Thanks

The last time the APEC summit was in Canada, Prime Minister Chretien sent the RCMP out to pepper-spray protesters. Count yourself lucky.

BenoitAubry In reply to restless-1 [2007-09-23 03:22:18 +0000 UTC]

Didn't they conclude that it was the RCMP's prerogative to use it? "Sgt. Pepper" went out of his way to toss some weight around. The protest was peaceful until he through in his macho Mountie self with a fire hydrant-sized cannister of pepper goo. No matter.

I don't think that use of force was repeated. In Ottawa at the G-8 Summit, there was no violence mainly because the cops weren't in riot gear. They used bicycles to contain the march's route. The crowd didn't even require a bandaid.

atom7 In reply to restless-1 [2007-09-11 10:44:31 +0000 UTC]

ooohhhh. Sounds nasty. I have never been pepper-spray though i have been tear-gassed (not at a protest, someone dropped a cannister for 'fun' at a gig) and that was bad enough Were you among the protesters? After a quick read i see the protests in canada were also, among other things, to do with free speech and the right to protest in the first place and the the protesters were sprayed to keep Indonesia's suharto happy. Its amazing what our leaders will do to their citizens when the lords are over for dinner so to speak. there is something wrong when these leaders are so hated that they have to hide themselves away like that. Not long ago the Dali lama also came to Australia but was welcomed with open arms and walked freely in the streets.

I wasn't there; I have nothing against APEC. I didn't support the protestors in what they were saying, but as Voltaire said, I defend their right to say it.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

atom7 In reply to restless-1 [2007-09-11 23:25:31 +0000 UTC]

Thats fair enough. Not all of the protests here were against apec some were aimed at a sole participant such as china for its human rights record or chile for its aquisition of the indigenous Mapuche lands. A few days before the march here the police tried to ban it. I think that brought alot of people out to march who also wished to defend their right march.
