The grip of the hands (and feet) are very wide, so it can accomodate branches, twigs, or tree trunks.

Oh, the nails are used exclusively for subduing prey or grooming: they use their finger and toe-pads for gripping.

Some mammals have long claws, which they use as combs, rather than climbing spikes.
Then again, some have long clwas that are used as both combs and climbing spikes.
