Description The front figure moved at the command, too fast for Hiccup to follow, and the boy soon found a painful grip squeeze around the back of his neck before he was forcibly dragged out of the cell...Hiccup squirmed and snarled, bucking and kicking, unwilling to be handled in such a way.

"Let g-don't touch me!"

The meaty fingers tightened against the sinews of his neck, pulling at the hair caught between hand and head.

Huzzah for prisoner!Hiccup! And I truly think he'd make a great captive. He has the right smart-ass attitude for it.

He and Toothless were captured by the Varangian guard in Byzantine. They're kind of a big deal.

He is supposed to be looking feral right here, after spending months living in the woods and not caring much for his appearance, hence the long, scraggly hair.

He's also bruised and bleeding (that's blood on his mouth, not facial hair).

But the million dollar question is: how the hell are those body positions possible? :/
All in all, another peice of crap that took ten minutes. And I'm back to scribbling for backgrounds!

Here you go... not as good as yours, but there it is. At least it let me remember an afternoon strolling on the Hippodrome, fleeing from the food stand hawkers and wondering what it would have looked like in its hey day, so here's my interpretation based on tourism and bad history research. Now I run for cover! [link]

I read this chapter while sitting on my bathroom floor. So intense. I don't usually cry while reading, but I cried when Hiccups cried. This chapter pretty much ripped my heart out. Excellent job. Stories usually don't bring me down, but this one just tore me apart inside (in a very awesome way). I might draw out some of the scenes from your story, because it is DEFINITELY one of the best I have ever read. Keep up the good work.

Guh! A bathroom floor? That's more depressing than I can handle! But hearing that I made you cry made my day...in the nicest way possible, of course

Thank you so much for the high praise, I'm glad you're enjoying reading it as much as I enjoy writing it!

And I would love to see some art of any scene

Actually I'm pretty sure my bathroom floor is the coziest place in my house, apart from my bed. haha.

I just don't know what I'm going to do until the next update. Man, cliffhanger endings always leave you with the questions of "WHAT WILL HAPPEN?!"

Hahaha, and I shall try my best to not put the work to shame!

For ten minutes, this was really good! I was drawing this scene at work, too, during a break. I am so bad. Broken arms are not easy to draw, either.

You got his expression very well- angry and terrified and defiant out of desperation. With the torn clothes and the blood and the long, dirty hair he really does look feral.

Good job for you and Your History Textbook

For a while I had to re-read that first sentence a few times thinking "wait...what happened after ten minutes that made it less good?"

I am clearly tired.

You were drawing this scene at work?! Cool! Did you have tragic thoughts on your mind? That doesn't sound like a good place to be in a work environment.
I didn't even attempt to draw the broken arm. I strategically put a viking there.

Ah, the ten minutes comment My way of writing can be confusing, too- I guess hopping back and forth between two languages does not help.

Oh, yeh, during breaks at work I doodle fanfic scenes. Yours happened to be the lucky winner. (Or unlucky based on my drawing style). No tragic thoughts, but it was a very moving chapter.

I am now wondering if this was some sort of divine test Hiccup and Toothless had to pass in the greater scheme of things- that to move on they had to show somehow their willingness to die for each other.

AvannaK In reply to FjordMustang [2011-01-20 15:30:25 +0000 UTC]

Oh boy, it is a test! You nailed it
And here I was hoping it wouldn't be too obvious. That's okay though, the test is only part of it; the reward would probably be a little bit harder to guess at

And I like your style. You're great at drawing Toothless, that's for sure!

FjordMustang In reply to AvannaK [2011-01-20 17:17:50 +0000 UTC]

Wow! Garshk, I done been nailing plots! No, it was not obvious. I was just thinking, if I had been writing that scene and considering the character arc of both Hiccup and Toothless learning to work together and grow beyond their own character flaws and that certain divine creatures are watching them... I would probably have this as a crucial test that has some very real life or death consequences. After all, the way I see your fiction, they have some very real life or death challenges ahead of them. The reward- hmm- not dying, at the very least, some sort of healing but hopefully not completely healed like nothing happens- it diminshes their sacrifice, but that's just me.

Thanks on my Toothless comments. Your Hiccup rocks. I was just thinking about, looking at this image, how much you have gradually been making him older since the beginning of the story. He really looks like a late teenager/even early 20s now- and that's awesome. His face is an adult's face here.

AvannaK In reply to FjordMustang [2011-01-20 18:58:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, then you have very good intuition on how I operate a fanfic

And Hiccup definitely won't fully heal. He'll have a hell of a scar to carry around. One day Astrid will find out that it was her axe that did it too.

It makes me happy to hear I'm aging him properly! I feel like all this ridiculous love I'm showing on this fandom is helping to hone my skills in art!

FjordMustang In reply to AvannaK [2011-01-20 19:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Indeed- I think your art was always good, but it's getting even better as you keep doing it. It also helps to have such neat subject matters.

That will be interesting when Astrid finds out about the axe and that incident.

We probably have similar styles with the way we write, so that might be it about the plot similarities.

I still think he looks hot but I'm guessing it's going to get a little longer before he starts putting it up huh?

AvannaK In reply to bloodmoon14 [2011-01-20 21:47:12 +0000 UTC]

It's actually supposed to be longer right now...I just had a dumb moment. A lot like the basket incident.

But his hair is actually going to get cut a little before it starts getting pulled back. Toothless will rejoice.

How long did you intend it to be? When I was doodling this it was coming out pretty long.

AvannaK In reply to FjordMustang [2011-01-20 15:29:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, I picture him with hair falling a little past his shoulders. A length that can rest past his collarbone at least.

FjordMustang In reply to AvannaK [2011-01-20 17:18:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeh, I guessed that, too, based on this being over a year and he has not cut his hair since leaving Berk, so it would be pretty long and wild.
