The dragonese is actually pretty intuitive, if you say it out loud and have the picture for context.

I have to call my bed a sleepy-slab from now on.

Toothless: A chocolate biscuit?

Hiccup: This isn't a chocolate biscuit, it's a poo, it's one of your poos Toothless and it isn't in the dragon toilets. It's right bang-splat in the middle of my father's bed.

Dragonese amuses me to no end XD

You totally drew the limpet.

I love you.

I love how I know exactly what each one of these is referencing, and I feel like I'm in on some CONSPIRACY or something. XD

The first one is totally one of my favorite scenes, too. That, the thank-yous, the limpet. Totally some of my faves. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

avatarmirai In reply to Crownflame [2010-07-10 21:05:29 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad that I got some of your favorite scenes in!

The limpet just had to be drawn for the sake of remembrance. I remember thinking that it was supposed to be an important plot point by the way Fishlegs seemed to be making a big deal about it, but alas, it never reached significance.

I've only read/heard up to book 5 (big fan of the audiobooks and David Tennant!), and I really should get around to placing holds on 6 and 7. Alas, the library doesn't have 8, but I'll probably order it online or something. Most likely I'll end up drawing more stuff from the books--like Camicazi! I really love her character XD

Crownflame In reply to avatarmirai [2010-07-11 01:50:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm about in the same place- I JUST ordered 5 and 6. (I'm plotting to own them all. MUAHAHAHAHA) I only heard that HTTYD had SEQUELS a couple years before the movie, and since I live in a po-dunk Kansas town, it's hard to get anything cool in a bookshop or library. XD I started this year, and I've been reading 'em all summer. XD

Ah, I think the limpet lived out its significance, though it was odd how Fishlegs took it, and then it mysteriously vanished... XD

I think the point of the limpet, given that the whole book's theme was treasure, was that one man's trash is another man's treasure- that treasure is subjective. In another context, Fishlegs and Hiccup might've been a lot more excited about a giant limpet, but because of the whole goings-on and the values of Viking society, well, it's just a limpet. I think it was Cowell's way of mentioning that treasure doesn't always have to be gold and jewels, and that oftentimes something is only valuable because the mob says it is.

OF course, I may be reading into it too much.... but I guess that's one of the reasons I love the limpet (and Hiccup's reactions in particular), aside from the fact that it's really random. XD

avatarmirai In reply to Crownflame [2010-07-11 02:31:53 +0000 UTC]

I think you pretty much nailed what the limpet was about. I really liked your analysis.

Admittedly I wasn't thinking about limpets as "treasure," but as a Chekov's Gun. I kept expecting it to turn up to unexpectedly save the day or something. Maybe that's what I get for reading too much Harry Potter, because it's the tiniest details that end up twisting a fan's brain. XD

Crownflame In reply to avatarmirai [2010-07-11 03:56:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it was weird how Fishlegs took it with them, and then it just vanished while running away from the Skullions/sank with the Lucky Thirteen. Kinda made you expect something, when they coulda just ditched it... I guess the introspection was what was important. (Brief, but to the point. Quite Vikingly.)

But yeah, I think Cowell knows exactly what she's talking about- these books are incredibly wise, but you would NEVER guess it by looking at 'em. XD

Maybe I'm just crazy... XD Reading Amazon reviews and such, it doesn't seem like a whole lot of people "get" it. XD

Of course, this is coming from a fangirl who has a hobby of comparing the Zelda games to the spread of early Christianity. Sooooooo... I tend to read a lot into things that probably isn't there.

I don't care, though. In fact, I once solved a dismal family feud using Cowell logic- my brother had recently read the first book, and so I was asking him, "is this a big dragon, or a little dragon, Nate? Is it a irritating annoyance, or is this a Really Big Problem?" and "Nate, no one can train this dragon. All you can do is try your hardest and hope for the best."

And using children's book references, I talked down the mighty beast. Hiccup would be proud. XD Mom was impressed...

Ah, I'm a dork.

Anyhow, I love the limpet, and I'm glad you liked my speculation, there. I do so much speculation... XD

I love that scene so much! Cowell built up the emotions very well and it makes my heart melt at the thought that, despite it all, they're always friends (even if they need a dragon-and-kid-napping to prove it).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Golden-Trio In reply to avatarmirai [2010-07-12 16:53:52 +0000 UTC]

There was this other scene, in Break a Dragon's Heart, when Hiccup had just escaped from the tree prison and Toothless was only just waking up, and there was just something about the way the dialogue was written ("Sh-sh-shall we go home?") that made me melt inside. Cressida is a genius with bringing out the emotion in her readers.

avatarmirai In reply to Golden-Trio [2010-07-13 00:39:41 +0000 UTC]

OH OKAY! I've only read up to the fifth, and I've been kind of lazy putting the rest on hold from the library. But wow, I was pretty emotional at the end of "How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse." I've read the first five in a sort of spree, so I'll let those sink in first and do fanart for them before moving on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Golden-Trio In reply to avatarmirai [2010-07-13 01:12:18 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah, take your time - I read the first two and then had to wait a good few weeks before getting the rest of them. Cheat a Dragon's Curse made us ALL go "WHAT" because even if you know that Hiccup is narrating the stories, and so nothing could have happened to him, it still gets you on edge regardless. The sign of great writing, I guess. But oh yes, the next few are real beauties. You'll see!
But if waiting longer means more fanart, then wait longer.
