Description No trip to western china would be complete without seeing a Tibetan temple. Tibetan monks, or as they call them "Lamas" daily walk through these long halls spinning these large cylinders that have prayers and names on them as part of their religious practice.

The particular area in Aba has a massive temple that had many monks in it. These corridors line the outside of the temple and at the end there is a larger cylinder inside a separate room that is spun twice then on to the next corridor.

In this temple I had an interesting experience. Normally taking photos within the temple or for "common people" to enter the center is forbidden, but the old man you see in front of you came out and talked to me, after he learned that I was from Seattle he told me the story of the Lama Nawang Kunga Tegchen Chakyl Nyima who also was from Seattle and insisted that I come with him to the temples inner area to participate in a prayer. This preferential treatment apparently is extremely rare. Anyway I participated in the activities which included getting down on my stomach and praying to a sacred relic, spinning a piece of colorful cloth on a wooden pole, and walking the entire length of all the corridors while spinning the cylinders.

Now before you ask how did I get a photo if it is forbidden, the Lama gave me permission to photograph what I wished except for the inner prayer area or the relic. I got many photos of the colorful and stunning wooden panels on the inside of the temple and was quite happy with the over all experience.

Canon 30V, Canon 28mm-135mm IS lens on Fuji 100 film.

PS. No "free tibet" slogans please.

What a great story to go with an amazing photo. The photo captures well the simplicity and depth of the Tibetan Spirit. The corridor of prayer wheels seems to go on forever, which is interesting because of how important the nature of the infinite is to Tibetan spirituality.

Great! Good contrast between the darkness of the hall and the 'shinyness' of the cylinders.

yeah, the lighting really worked out for me here, the windows were dirty and it was a slightly overcast day so that made it perfect for the lighting to not overwhelm the shadows and colors in the photo, plus as usual I shot this at 1 stop down so it would be darker as I traditionaly do on all my shots

ehhhh yeah, I would have rather got a front shot, but I could jsut run in front of him and start shooting photos, it would have been more then rude, probably sacreligious or something

Considering the nature of the situation I like the shot as it is. Unless you turned around somewhat akwardly this is what you would see, so it is kind of truer to reality this way.

you have been trully blessed to get that change, but one thing i did'nt like was the way you have mention the visit "No trip to western china would be complete without seeing a Tibetan temple", you do realize that the chinese goverment has taken the Tibet Country, and they are illegaly ocupying the tibetan territory!! please take notice next time you refer to "western China"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

avotius In reply to WhiteMerovingian [2004-08-16 19:15:32 +0000 UTC]

I knew someone would comment on that, and I dont know what you mean by illegaly, tibet is clearly marked as part of china in the boarder, not to mention that its also marked as part of india in their boarder.

Also while we are at it america is illegaly occupying native american territory, not to mention when the west left the union they took it back, etc etc etc

Although ill give you one further and tell you that even here in china tibet is "considered" a seperate country by the people, if a chinese or any other person wants to go in they must get a visa for entry. So actualy its a really strange and odd situation, it used to be china's, and it used to be india's, and it used to be its own, shit happens, goverments screw everyone, its the common story since the dawn of civilization.

ps. this photo was taken in western china, the aba area is actualy 300 or so km from the tibeten border....

WhiteMerovingian In reply to avotius [2004-08-16 22:32:50 +0000 UTC]

if it's 300 km from the tibet land, then it's a Budhism temple, not a tibetan one .

by saying "Shit Happens", i can guess you realy don't care, is that it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

avotius In reply to WhiteMerovingian [2004-08-16 23:06:43 +0000 UTC]

your statement above is slightly flawed because the area was tibet and is not anymore, tibet used to be larger then it was, and india and china have both claimed parts of it over the last thousand years. It really is like the middle east, everyone thinks something is theirs and that everyone else is wrong, any everyone else is trying to stick their nose in it.

and shit happens means it happens, what are you gona do about it, frankly I dont think its anyone elses bussiness besides china and tibet, everyone else should keep their noses out. There are many things that happen in the world that we cant do anything about so rather then sit there and complain, just take it all in and examin the fact that this is how it is and try to understand why it is

WhiteMerovingian In reply to avotius [2004-08-17 17:06:03 +0000 UTC]

well the reason, i know exactly why it is, pure greed, nothing less, nothing more, but understading does not mean agreement!, i just stateted the diferent due to your frase "this photo was taken in western china, the aba area is actualy 300 or so km from the tibeten border...."

You are lucky, When I visit a temple on the border between The Yunnan and the Tibet, When I ask if i coulf take some picture,The monk simply show a very agressive attitude. Not really boudhism.

Anyway i like very much this part of China. I hope I will go back there in October.

its a nice place ya, the grass lands were the interesting part for me, not for the scenery, but for the inhabitants, which I took the oppertunity to chat with a lot, ill probably be going back there in a year or so on a class trip or one of those sort of things, but this time it was nice to get out and just experence it without all those people around....
