May 2016Acrylic over white gesso over MDF wood.
49 x 60 x 1.5 cm
Neptune as seen from a beach on Triton, its largest moon.
The ocean it's made of nitrogen and some hydrocarbons. Back in the 1970's some scientists thought that Triton had a thick atmosphere and maybe even nitrogen seas or lakes. This painting takes place in that fantasy Triton that never existed.

Got to like that shadow cast by the rings. I made a simple model in 3ds max of a planet with rings orbiting a star to see how the shadows would be.

Yes yes do. I like how the shadow moves up and down over the year and changes it's width. Also how some parts of the year the upper ring is lit, other times the lower part. And of course the moon casts shadows on the rings, and the rings casts shadows on the moon, creating complicated lunar cycles.
