I always thought they were afraid of being your pokemon's next target(well, the PC is only 10 so it's safe to assume they'd be a little impulsive like that), but that's just me

Thats a good point! And actually, in the anime, Jessy and James in one episode carried firearms. The big problem for rocket however, is some of those Pokèmon you can carry around are just WAY scarier then any knife, bat, or general side arm. Granted, bullets are what ended platemail, but Pokèmon get burned, poisoned, stabbed, lacerated, electrocuted, frozen solid, and tackled by one-thousand pounds of Snorelax! I wouldn't even try pointing a gun at a charizard... Granted, Rocket might be scummy enough to shoot the kid, but again, what to do with that Charizard after you just killed his master and whole world? I wouldn't want to be the guy responsible for that...

Why thank you! It's just the way I've come to see things in the world of Pokèmon, and how I rationalize why guns are so seldom used when I host Pokèmon roleplays!

Why would any Trainer (Team Rocket or not) need guns when they can train their Pokemon to do anything? They can incinerate any person in an instant with a Fire-type and drown them with a water-type. I assume it's not like that in the games due to mechanics and all since they can only do so much. Though if it was story, we'd have somethings like that, possibly with Red and his allies kicking ass.
Of course, that's where stories based on Pokemon come in to go beyond the games' limitations.

as for guns, they most likely were never inventet in the pokemon universe, or if they were they most likely never developted very far for a number of reasons which i wont go into here.
as for why they couldnt just beat him up, could you do that, to a guy with a fire breathing dragon at his side?

In the game there may not be guns but I know that in one of the original episodes of Pokemon, the japanese version of it had a gun pointed at Ash

Yes, in the early ANIME episodes and not the games. Plus, who needs a gun in the Pokemon world when you have Pokemon that you can use? One flamethrower and your enemy is burnt toast.

A trainer could attack a bad guy with his pokemon and since the bad guy already lost the battle he has no pokemon to defend himself.
So it's like: "My Charizard burned up your Rattata now let me pass before it burns up you."

Team rocket were soo much better in the manga than the anime. also the game was ok but what was the deal with attacking a trainer with a freaking rattata?!!! Its like you are being asked to be beaten.

in adventures lance used a hyper beam to destroy vermillion harbor...and i'm pretty sure sabrina used articuno to freeze red ... and then lorelei froze red ... then a rocket grunt turned red into stone so ....
the moral of the story team rocket seriously dropped the ball

that's what I was thinking. I'm pretty sure the grunts back off after losing a battle because they no longer have any usable Pokemon, whilst the kid who just beat them still has at least one monster on them, said monster generally accepted as being capable of overpowering a human very easily (which is why you need tamed monsters of your own to fend them off in the first place). Of course, there could be some exceptions (what if the kid's last remaining Pokemon was a Wobbuffet? What if the kid just barely managed to get by using a Magikarp that has now exhausted its PP for Tackle, Flail, and possibly Bounce?), but obviously, we shouldn't expect the game programmers to account for details like that.
