I love how the lighting and the weird angle help to acheive the amount of anger in the picture. I love those teeth!

im in fights with people and it seems one can hide behind 'its my style'
would work like this still be good, correct if the figure in the foreground was colored flat or as it would in harsh lighting?
I don't want to be wrong but I'm not believing those "if it makes them happy/if that's what they love" folk that will tell you "its not bad art if your foreground figures aren't backlight when the background states it should"

I'm not quite sure what you are saying in your comment. If you could clarify, I'd be happy to answer!

i want to know if 'it is my style' can be used for bad art, be it drawing deer so they look like horses, or coloring in your drawings with certain lighting
if that were the case, anyone can draw a picture like yours, but color the figure as if it was not in that sunset/atmospheric condition.
like drawing a picture of a "horse in moonlight" but the horse is colored like in high noon lighting.
it dosen't make the drawing bad or wrong, and nobody should be the judge of it and flame the artist by going "OH hai, i know its hard but your horse should look more like *example* and not colored as the sun would shine at high noon"
that is a nono that constricts creativity and 'its a valid style"
so do you think so?
your drawing would not be "wrong" if the wolf was colored with the wrong lighting.

I am really not sure how my lighting is wrong in this case (as a setting sun does often give a back glow as you see here. Nor have I ever used the claim of 'It's my style' as a defense for not trying to do my best to make each piece believable. I think your comment, while maybe trying to carry a valid point, came off a bit aggressive and I feel it was more of an attack than a genuine attempt to offer me constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is not meant to prove a point so much as offer an artist the opportunity to grow through the benefit of sound advice. I am always aiming to learn and to do so one has to remain humble in order to see the areas in their work that require improvement. I never claimed everything I do is right/a success so again I am not sure where the comment on claiming style in defense of flaws came from. I appreciate your taking the time to try and reach me but I am afraid you have only left me feeling a bit defensive and confused more than enlightened.

ahgg no I just figure yours was more correct backlighting and i want to know what other, more established 'big namers' think of the statements of "Its my style" you know "its my style to draw cows that look like hoved dogs"

I'm really not sure how other 'established' artists think. I guess that probably first depends on how one defines established. If it's by popularity on DA, I am sure it varies since there are a fair number of popular artists who do art for the sake of keeping that popularity. Most artists I know personally whom happen to have popular online galleries, tend to be of humble spirit and don't use 'style' as justification for flaws in their work. Those people are the ones who use online galleries to help broaden their horizons..which means improving as artists chiefly..which means being able to accept criticism with humility and respect!
Personally I do not subscribe to the 'it is my style' school of thought. It seems to me too much an easy way out from acknowledging constructive crits in lieu of empty flattery.
I'm sorry I misunderstood you.

Well as far as delivering critique goes, I also have strong beliefs that delivering critique must be done with tact and respect of the artist. Telling someone "your moose looks like a rhino with antlers" will most likely put the artist in a defensive mode and they will hardly address you respectfully when you did not do them that same courtesy. Nor do I really see that sort of comment as at all constructive. If your aim is to give constructive crit and it only manages to be ignored by the artist, then at the end of the day it is you who wasted your time as your critique was never heard. I am not saying everything has to be sugar coated but the creative process is a very intimate process for most artists. Yes we should learn to separate ourselves more from our art but to some extent that is just not possible. I also don't believe that there is only one way to give critique and if you are genuinely out to help you will at least try to cater your advice to the artist to ensure the artist actually hears what you say and you don't waste your breath and valuable time and still go unheard.
